『本草綱目』に六七月に黄花五出の花を開くと云う者は合わない。その根実は皆能く王瓜に合う。その実殻中の子は玉章（フミ）のようである〈倭では書翰巻封者を呼んで玉章と云う〉。人が誤ってこれと栝楼を一物と以為するのと和名もまた相混ずるのは非である。蓋し栝楼は〈比佐古宇里〉、王瓜は即ち老鴉瓜〈加良須宇里〉。和名は自ら明かである。

"Bencao Gangmu" (Compendium of Materia Medica) says it blooms yellow five-petaled flowers in the sixth and seventh months, but this does not match. Its roots and fruits all correspond well to ōka. The seeds within the fruit shell resemble tamatsusa (letters) 〈In Japan, rolled and sealed letters are called tamatsusa〉. People erroneously consider this and katsurou to be the same plant, and the Japanese names are also confused, which is incorrect. Indeed, katsurou is 〈hisagouri〉, and ōka is precisely old crow melon 〈karasouri〉. The Japanese names are naturally distinct.
