冬瓜（カモウリ）
カモは毛氈（モウセン）の和名なり（『順和名抄』）
氈の字は「賀毛（茂）」と訓む。また『拾遺集』に
車のカモを乞うた事を載せてある。
車の内に敷く氈なり。この瓜、冬に
至れば白毛ありて氈に似たり。故にカモ
ウリと名づく。
予曰く
この冬瓜、葉茎に白毛ありて甚だ薫香あり。
手をもって打てばよく匂い、手に香る。

"Yamato Honzō" states:
Winter melon (Kamo-uri)
"Kamo" is the Japanese name for felt (mōsen) (according to "Jun Wamyōshō").
The character for felt is read as "kamo (mo/flourishing)." Also in the "Shūishū"
there is a record of someone requesting kamo for a cart.
It is felt spread inside carts. This melon, when
winter arrives, has white hair resembling felt, hence it is
named Kamo-uri.
I say:
This winter melon has white hair on its leaves and stems with a very fragrant aroma.
When struck by hand, it gives off a good fragrance that scents the hand.
