扨万次郎義ハメリカ「フイチセル」宅ニ而成長いたし
此度同国「デべス」と申人もの相雇鯨船ニのり「ウワホー」
湊ニ着帆兄弟未上陸不仕中小舟ニ而尋来り久
振り対面仕り此度の事抔噺し候いなや「テべス」出
帆ニ付怱々相別申候扨又かの「リヨウヂ」へ委細之義
申延又々其世話を以「ハナロ」ノ湊より五里中隔り候
「ウリ〳〵」と申所へ参り兄弟百姓日傭仕り罷在候處
戊ノ年九月「ハナロ」ノ湊より万次郎言伝を以呼に
越し候ニ付早速罷越し対面仕候處帰朝之志
有之趣ニ而寅右衛門へも申通し四人相参り楽談
仕候万次郎義ハメリカニ而地理測量之法など相
習鯨船にて万国を航海いたし候趣ニ而帰朝

初メ万次郎烏王府「ハナロ」ノ湊ニ而伝兵衛等四人ニ相わかれ
「フイチセル」に従南へのり出し「キンシメクロ」と申島にの り付
漁事仕候方を船中へ買入申候此辺をはだか島と唱
候此島山ニ而ハ無之平地ニ而帆柱之様に見へ候物ハ皆
椰子の木にて島人其実を常食ニ仕候赤道近辺
之事故暑気甚しく五穀ハ不及申水も無之椰子
之実之中に有之汁を吸候よし衣類は申も無御座
男女ともにはだかニ而女ハ椰子之葉を以纔に前を

この度同国の「デイビス」という人に雇われ捕鯨船に乗って「オアフ」
港に入港した。兄弟がまだ上陸しない間に小舟で尋ねてきて久し
振りに面会し、この度のことなど話をしたが、すぐに「デイビス」が出
港するため急いで別れた。さて再びかの「リコーヂ」へ詳細を
申し述べ、またその世話で「ホノルル」の港より五里離れた
「ウリウリ」という所へ行き、兄弟は農業の日雇いをしていたところ、
戊年九月「ホノルル」の港より万次郎の伝言で呼びに
来たので早速出かけて面会したところ、帰朝の意志が
あるとのことで寅右衛門へも連絡し四人で集まって楽しく談話
した。万次郎はアメリカで地理測量の方法などを習い、
捕鯨船で万国を航海したとのことで、帰朝の
便船のことは容易いことだと申すので、きっと約束した。
初め万次郎は王府「ホノルル」の港で伝兵衛等四人と別れ、
「フィチセル」に従って南へ向かい「キンシメクロ」という島に着いて
漁をする者を船中へ買い入れた。この辺りを裸島と呼んで
いる。この島は山ではなく平地で、帆柱のように見える物はすべて
椰子の木で、島人はその実を常食にしている。赤道近辺の
ことなので暑気が甚だしく、五穀は言うに及ばず水もなく、椰子
の実の中にある汁を吸うとのこと。衣類は言うまでもなく、
男女ともに裸で、女は椰子の葉でわずかに前を
覆っている。もしうつむいた時は後ろの様子は言い難い。
家は椰子の木で四本足の小さな家を作っており、また

Initially, Manjiro had parted from the four including Denbei at the royal government port of "Honolulu"
and following "Fichsel," sailed south to an island called "Kinshimekuro" where they
took aboard fishermen. This area is called the Naked Islands.
This island is not mountainous but flat land, and what appears like masts are all
coconut trees, with the islanders eating the fruit as their staple food. Being near the equator,
the heat is extreme, and needless to say there are no five grains, and no water either - they drink
the juice inside coconut fruits. As for clothing, it goes without saying,
both men and women are naked, with women using coconut leaves to barely cover their
front. When they bend forward, the rear view is indescribable.
