一北米利幹本地人物亜細亜二異り不申色者黒き方ニ而
御座候尤昔し英吉利よりひらき候国故「イキリス」種之
人多く罷在候此人者色白く目に少し黄ミ御座候気
候ハ四時御座候へ共惣して寒き方ニ候代々之国王
と申ハ無之学問才覚有之者撰之出され王に
相成り四年にして又他人ニ譲り申候政事よく行届き
衆人の惜しミ候人ハ年つぎを以八年王位ニ罷在候至而軽
き暮し方ニ而往来には馬にのり従者唯一人馬の後
ニ参り申候他人江譲り隠居致し候而ハ在位之内一日二
金銭千弐百枚計収納いたし候其儲を以一生安楽に
暮し申候役人躰之人も有之候へ共権威を取るなと
申事ハなくいつれか役人や知れ不申候唯今之王ハ

名を「テへラ」と申五年前「メキシユ」国と界論有之合戦二及
候時右「テへラ」討手大将にて石火矢を以敵陣を撃破り
馬を取り入れ又人数を敵の後へ繰廻し抔して大に打勝
評判甚よろしく遂に王之譲りを受罷在候才覚ある
「イキリス」種之人ニ而御座候英吉利より開きたる国ニそう候へ共
其属国ニ而ハ無御座候今子年ハ王之だ代ニ相當り候
一禽獣草木日本に有之も無之も御座候桜ハ無之竹も
無御座候作物ハ麦黍の類ニ而米ハ無御座候平郊高
山大川有之北米利幹全州三ケ一ノ分之處を三十一国
分ち有之共和之国と申而日本を七ツ合候程御座候よし
王都ハ又「ヨラカ」と申所ニ而私罷在候「スーぺツポウ」湊より
八十里程西南ニ當り申候

一　北米国本地の人物は亜細亜と異なることはなく、色はやや黒い方である。もっとも昔イギリスより開かれた国ゆえ「イギリス」系の人が多くいる。この人は色白く目に少し黄味がある。気候は四季があるけれども総して寒い方である。代々の国王というものはなく、学問才覚のある者を選び出されて王になり、四年にして又他人に譲る。政事がよく行き届き衆人が惜しむ人は年継ぎをもって八年王位にある。至って軽い暮らし方にて往来には馬に乗り従者ただ一人馬の後に参る。他人へ譲り隠居した後は在位の内一日に金銭千二百枚ほど収納したその儲けをもって一生安楽に暮らす。役人体の人もいるけれども権威を取るなどということはなく、いずれが役人やら知れない。ただ今の王は

一　禽獣草木、日本にあるものもないものもある。桜はなく竹もない。作物は麦・黍の類にて米はない。平野・高山・大川があり、北米国全州三分の一の分のところを三十一国に分かち、共和の国と申して日本を七つ合わせたほどある。王都はまた「ニューヨーク」と申すところにて私がいた「スペリオル湖」港より八十里ほど西南に当たる。

First, the native people of North America are not different from Asians, with skin color tending toward the darker side. However, since this is a country originally opened by the British, there are many people of "English" stock. These people are fair-skinned with slightly yellowish eyes. The climate has four seasons but tends overall toward the cold. There are no hereditary kings; rather, those with learning and ability are selected to become king, serving for four years before passing the position to another. Those whose governance is well-administered and who are regretted by the people may serve eight years through succession. They live very simply - when traveling, they ride horses with only one attendant following behind on horseback. After passing the position to another and retiring, they live comfortably for life on the savings from their time in office, when they collected about 1,200 pieces of gold daily. There are also officials, but there is no taking of authority, and one cannot tell who are the officials. The current king is

named "Taylor," and five years ago when there was a border dispute with "Mexico" that led to war, this "Taylor" served as commanding general, using firearms to break enemy formations, bringing in cavalry and maneuvering troops to the enemy's rear, achieving great victory. His reputation was excellent and he ultimately received the succession to kingship. He is a capable person of "English" stock. Though this country was opened by Britain, it is not a British dependency. This year of the Rat corresponds to the king's reign period.

First, regarding birds, animals, plants and trees - some exist in Japan and some do not. There are no cherry blossoms and no bamboo. Crops are varieties of wheat and millet, with no rice. There are plains, high mountains, and great rivers. The place encompasses one-third of all North American states divided into thirty-one countries, called a republic, said to be about the size of seven Japans combined. The capital is in a place called "New York," located about eighty ri southwest of the "Superior Lake" port where I stayed.
