一 常食を「パン」という。製し方は麦を粉にし、豚の脂でこね、鶏卵・砂糖で味をつけ、饅頭のように蒸し、牛乳をつけて朝昼晩と三度食べる。製し方も上品・下品がある。味噌・醤油は皆無である。肉類・葱類すべて塩で味をつけ、油で炒めあげて食べる。食事の時には大きな机のような物を置き、家内一同がこれを囲み、腰掛けに腰をかけ、机の上で食事をする。米はインド・清国・南米から交易し、米問屋もあるけれども味の薄い物で人の力にならないと申して常食にはしない。病人等の粥にすることもある。物好きで食べる者もたまたまいる。俵というものはなく、麦も米も金輪の樽詰めにし、丸い升で汲む。
衣類は西洋の留袖・羅紗類で仕立てる。定まった色はなく何色でもある。髪は詰み込みにして焼金で髪端を焼き、ちりちりとまかせる。これが西洋・東洋で筒袖を着用する所の作法であるという。「アンブレラ」様の物を編む。ルソンより渡った笠を着して往来する。女の笠には色々美しい飾りがある。
一 家作も西洋風で障子類は皆「ビードロ」で製し、二階・三階・四階・五階ともにある。日本家作のような屈曲はなく、中の方に至っては必ず暗い間がある。壁は焼石で製し、赤・白・色々ある。瓦もこれで製する。また石灰の類も見える。畳はなく、板の上にも羅紗を敷き、腰掛けに座っている。

First, the staple food is called "bread." First, house construction is also Western-style, with all sliding doors made of "glass," and there are two, three, four, and five-story buildings. Unlike Japanese house construction, there are no curves, and toward the interior there are necessarily dark rooms. Walls are made of fired stone in red, white, and various colors. Roof tiles are also made from this. Lime-like materials are also visible. There are no tatami mats; even on wooden floors, woolen cloth is spread and people sit on chairs.
