婦の義を守り不義の心得不可有旨被申聞其時請け
いたし候得ハ則願届に相成り夫婦之名を懸け札ニ記し
かけ置き夫より夫婦並親類相連れ茶屋躰之所へ
保養に参り家に連れ帰り夫婦に相成り申候
富人といへとも一妻に妾と申者無御座候
一女子十三四五に相成候へハ夫とすへき人を思ひ定候を
第一之義と仕り或ハ数人と取合ひいたし六ヶ敷相成候
事も有之候得共再ひハ無之様ニ御座候親之気付
入らさる人を妻にいたし勘當被申付候人ハ毎々御座候

惣して女ハ眉之宜しき多き様に御座候よく湯
だらい致し候而己にて白粉も紅も無御座候惣ふん
種へ施療仕り候間あばた之人無御座候
一葬之義大抵日本に同しく臥棺におさめ地江う
すめ申候出家躰之人来り候て経を読候様之事とも
仕候此人坊主にてハ無御座妻子御座候
一死たる人を祭ると申す事すべて無御座候墓
にはしるしを立置き折々草をとりに行者

現代語訳
婦の義を守り不義の心得があってはならない旨を申し聞かせ、その時請け合いをすれば、則ち願い届けということになり、夫婦の名を掛け札に記して掛け置き、夫より夫婦並びに親類相連れて茶屋体の所へ保養に参り、家に連れ帰って夫婦となる。富人といえども一妻であり、妾という者はいない。
一 女子が十三、四、五歳になると、夫とすべき人を思い定めることを第一の義としており、或いは数人と取り合いをして難しくなることもあるけれども、再びはないようである。親の気に入らない人を妻にして勘当を申し付けられる人は度々いる。
総じて女は眉の美しい人が多いようである。よく湯浴みをするだけで、白粉も紅もない。総じて天然痘の予防接種をするので、あばたの人はいない。
一 葬儀のことは大抵日本と同じく、寝棺に納めて地に埋める。出家体の人が来て経を読むようなこともするが、この人は坊主ではなく、妻子がいる。
一 死んだ人を祭るということは全くない。墓には印を立て置き、折々草を取りに行く者がいる。
文字は横文字が二十六あって、万事に通用する。鳥の羽で唐紙のような紙に書く。画を描く時は筆を用いる。
一 算法の理は日本の算に異ならない。算盤は大いに異なり、縦横一尺ほどの紫色の石を薄板のようにして、木でこの縁をして、釘のような物で字を彫り付けて算用をする。

[the wife] must uphold wifely duties and must not harbor any improper thoughts. When they make this pledge at that time, it becomes an official application, and the couple's names are written on a placard and hung up. The husband, along with the couple and relatives, goes to tea house-like establishments for recreation, then returns home and becomes husband and wife. Even wealthy people have only one wife; there are no concubines.
First, when girls reach thirteen, fourteen, or fifteen years of age, deciding on who should be their husband is considered the primary matter. Sometimes there may be competition among several suitors making things difficult, but this does not happen repeatedly. There are often people who are disowned for marrying someone their parents disapprove of.
Generally, women with beautiful eyebrows seem to be numerous. They simply bathe well in hot water, using neither white powder nor rouge. Since they universally inoculate against smallpox, there are no people with pockmarks.
First, regarding funerals, much like in Japan, [the deceased] are placed in lying coffins and buried in the ground. Monk-like people come and chant sutras, but these people are not Buddhist monks and have wives and children.
First, there is no practice of worshipping the dead at all. Markers are erected at graves, and occasionally people go to remove weeds.
The writing consists of twenty-six horizontal letters that are used for all purposes. They write with bird feathers on paper resembling Chinese paper. When drawing pictures, they use brushes.
First, the principles of arithmetic do not differ from Japanese calculation. The abacus is greatly different - they make thin board-like pieces from purple stone about one shaku square, frame them with wood, and carve characters with nail-like implements to perform calculations.
