一露頭ニ高く張り金を引有之是ニ而番状を掛け駅
より駅江おのつと達し飛脚を労し不申候中にて行
違ハぬ様に往返の差別を仕り御座候此機私は
存し付さる状を魚候物鉄にて磁石を以吸ひよせ候様ニ

一洋中二而鯨を捕候義ハ檣に上り鯨を見罷在り見
付候時ハ小舟五六艘おろし多くもりを打かけ其緒を
とり幾里も鯨を追行き鯨の弱りたる時分に大船の
ロクロを以巻揚筒切ニ仕り船中之大釡ニ而油をとり肉
ハ毒と申事ニ而其侭すて申候
一船に鯨之つき候時は楽之豚を以釣し其後も取り申
或はもりニ而突殺し申候夜分洋中一面之火ニ相成
候事毎夜御座候其侭船をのり漁候得者火ニ而は
無御座皆汐之泡之光りニ而御座候其外火之檣江

一 船舶はすべてヨーロッパ製に倣っている。旗印は異なるけれども、船はそれほど異ならない。大船は洋中で大波を三つ乗り越せば転覆の恐れがないと言って、皆三十間以上に造っている。
一 陸上の運送には車も馬も用いている。それ故に大道は山を越えないように迂回して作ってある。「レイルロード」という蒸気車があって、機関車と同じということである。定期船は近年禁制になったということで見かけなかった。
一 露出した高い所に金属線を張ってあり、これで書状を掛けて駅から駅へ自動的に達し、飛脚を煩わせない。途中で行き違わないように往復の区別をしてある。この仕組みは私にはよく理解できないが、鉄を磁石で吸い寄せるようなものと考えている。
一 洋中で鯨を捕ることについては、檣に上って鯨の在り処を見て、見つけた時は小舟五、六艘を降ろし、多くの銛を打ちかけ、その綱を取って何里も鯨を追いかけ、鯨の弱った時分に大船の轆轤で巻き上げて筒切りにし、船中の大釜で油を取り、肉は毒だということでそのまま捨てている。
一 船に鯨がついている時は楽器の太鼓で釣り、その後も取る。或いは銛で突き殺す。夜分、洋中一面が火のようになることが毎夜ある。そのまま船を乗って漁をすると、火ではなく皆潮の泡の光りである。その外、火が檣へ飛来することがある。これもただの浮き気で、風雨の前に現れる。

First, all ships follow European construction. Though the flags differ, the ships themselves are not very different. Large ships are all built over thirty ken in length, saying that if they can ride over three large waves in the ocean, there is no fear of capsizing.
First, for land transportation, both carts and horses are used. Therefore, major roads are built to detour around mountains rather than cross them. There is a steam vehicle called "railroad" which is the same as a steam engine. Regular ships have been prohibited in recent years, so I did not see any.
First, metal wires are strung high in exposed places, and letters are hung on these to automatically reach from station to station without troubling messengers. Distinctions are made between outgoing and incoming to prevent confusion along the way. I do not fully understand this mechanism, but I think it works like iron being drawn by a magnet.
First, regarding whale hunting in the ocean: they climb the mast to spot whales, and when found, they lower five or six small boats, strike many harpoons, take the ropes and chase the whale for many ri. When the whale weakens, they haul it up with the large ship's pulley, cut it into sections, extract oil in large cauldrons aboard the ship, and discard the meat, saying it is poisonous.
First, when whales approach the ship, they use drums to attract them and then catch them, or kill them with harpoons. At night, the entire ocean surface appears to be on fire every night. When sailing and fishing in this condition, it is not actually fire but all the light from sea foam. Additionally, fire sometimes flies to the mast. This too is just atmospheric phenomena that appears before wind and rain.
