一 アメリカ南北の間は山一つで縦に続いており、第一の大きな場所は五里ほどある。これを切り抜けば航海の便利がよろしいので切り抜く筈になったところ、またその湾になった所の斬り取った高い上から瀬が湧き出る所があり、切り抜けばメキシコの方まで来て多くの地を損するということでやめたのである。
一 「スペクホフ」の船大工「アレニ」という人の娘「チエン」という年三十ほどの女師匠がいて、「フィッチェル」の世話でこの人に入門し、初めて横文字を習った。「フィッチェル」は年三十七八ほどの人である。同所に「シャヒン」という百十二歳になる老人がいて、甚だ壮健に仕事をしている。
