皮履知是泰西人蓋有漂客帰自米利幹者一時喧伝
見者如堵余適病不得見之吉田子永図以寄余其衣

子永又次第其漂寓事実也小冊子明白簡尽一覧可
了索序余余嘗聞大南海中有慈石為暗礁船或近之

上は短い上着、下は袴を穿き、皆きつい靴下で足を束ね、身体の表面にはさらに毛織物の衣服を加え、フェルトの笠をかぶり、皮の履物を履いている。これが西洋人であることが分かる。思うに漂流者でアメリカから帰国した者がいて、一時評判となり、見物人が垣根のように集まった。私はたまたま病気で見ることができなかったが、吉田子永が図に描いて私に送ってくれた。その衣服の様子は大体このようなものであった。
私が考えるに、地球上で西洋とアメリカは東西に離れているにもかかわらず、風俗習慣がほぼ同じである。これはアメリカの地が西洋人によって分割統治されているからであろうか。
子永はまたその漂流・滞在の事実を順次記録し、小冊子にまとめた。明白で簡潔であり、一覧すれば理解できる。序文を求められた。
私はかつて南海の中に磁石の暗礁があると聞いたことがある。船がそれに近づくと鉄釘が皆吸い寄せられて抜かれ、たちまち粉々になってしまうという。書物にも記載されている。今や航海の範囲は日々広がり、全地球のどこにでも行けるようになったが、南極の下の茫漠とした海は測り知れないようである。漂流者の語ることは本当に信じられるのであろうか。
我が国は遠く離れており、西洋の書物を研究する者もいないが、この漂流者はすでにアメリカ語を理解し、またその文字を習得して、彼らの事情を詳しく知り、自分の不足を補うことができる。この書物の著述は単なる奇談に留まらない。

Wearing a short jacket on top, trousers below, all with tight socks binding the feet, with woolen garments added over the body, wearing felt hats, and leather shoes. One can tell these are Westerners. There was a castaway who returned from America, and it became the talk of the town for a time, with onlookers gathering like a wall. I happened to be ill and could not see him, but Yoshida Shiei drew a picture and sent it to me. The appearance of the clothing was roughly like this.
I consider that although the West and America are separated by east and west on the globe, their customs and practices are roughly the same. Could this be because the American lands are divided and governed by Western people?
Shiei also recorded the facts of the drifting and sojourn in sequence, compiling them into a small booklet. It is clear and concise, and can be understood at a glance. I was asked for a preface.
I once heard that in the South Seas there are magnetic reefs. When ships approach them, all the iron nails are drawn out by attraction and instantly shattered to pieces. This is also recorded in books. Now navigation expands daily, and one can travel everywhere on the entire globe, but the vast ocean beneath the South Pole seems immeasurable. Can what the castaway tells us really be trusted?
Our country is distant and has no one who studies Western books, but this castaway has already learned the American language and mastered their writing, enabling him to understand their circumstances in detail and supplement his own deficiencies. The writing of this book is not merely strange tales.
