一医ハ未開けす尤蘭国より出る医者あり日本病と
云事流行す大熱病なり此療治を桶に水を
入れて病人を入らしめ或いハ土中ニ穴を掘り体を
埋めて冷し熱を覚すといふ治する者少し
一西洋ニ種痘何万ニ而もありアメリカ国ハ痘出れハ刃
物を以て痘を雕除くる療治あり故ニ侵に人
を損する事なし
一近来南北アメリカ国辺境の争より合戦ありて北
アメリカ勝利なるよし此戦を万次郎鯨舟て見

類がない。万次郎の隣家に伯父と姪が住んでいる者があり、その家へ日々夜々若い男が集まってくるのを伯父が深く拒み、女子を三階へ追い上げた。女は十八歳であるが人に会わせない。このようにしていたところ、ある夜一人の男子がいて外より梯子を掛けて女を誘い出し、共に走って庄屋の宅に至り、事の次第を詳しく語った。庄屋が憐れんで書き物を与える。これを以て寺院へ行き判を取って帰る。それより伯父はどうしようもなくしてその家を出立したとのことである。
一、医学はまだ開けていない。もっともオランダ国より出る医者がある。日本病ということが流行する。大熱病である。この療治を桶に水を入れて病人を入らせ、或いは土中に穴を掘り体を埋めて冷やし熱を覚ますという。治る者は少ない。
一、西洋には種痘が何万でもありアメリカ国は痘が出れば刃物を以て痘を削り除く療治がある。故に深刻に人を損なうことがない。
一、近来南北アメリカ国境界の争いより合戦があって北アメリカが勝利したとのこと。この戦いを万次郎は鯨船で見たとのことである。

When young men gathered at their house day and night, the uncle strongly objected and forced the girl up to the third floor. Though the woman was eighteen years old, he would not let her meet anyone. While things continued this way, one night a young man came and placed a ladder against the outside [of the house], enticed the woman out, and together they ran to the village headman's house, where they explained the entire situation in detail. The headman took pity on them and gave them a written document. With this they went to a temple, obtained official approval, and returned. After this, the uncle had no choice but to leave that house.

The treatment for this involves putting the patient in a tub of water, or digging a hole in the ground and burying the body to cool it and relieve the fever. Few recover from it.
