申神仏を手を合せ拝ミ候哉といふ様之手招いたし候
間其通いたし候様手招仕候処又日本之壱朱銀弐十
切弐朱判壱片銭一文ニ和製之きせる壱本取て持
来り見せ候間是皆我々共国許之物ニ候間手招を以答
候処必定日本人ニ承知いたし是ハ此十余年前大坂商
船此処へ漂流いたし候事有之其時ゟ持伝候様後ニ承り
申候扨詮議済ニ相成り各「ハスダラ」と申銀銭一枚ツヽもらい
受万次郎義ハ「フイチセル」所望ニ而本国へ連行度段申
ニ付万次郎之心次第と答申候処随分いたわり可申
間聊気つかい申間敷旨四人之者へ申聞万次郎を
かの鯨船ニのせ出帆いたし此時万次郎十四歳にて
御座候

成候得共言語も通し不申空しく月日をおく送り罷在候
処翌寅之夏之頃に至り候而は言語よふやく通し品

毒に存し相応働方いたし度段申出候処奉行より
預り人之事故其義には不及無心配相暮し候様懇に
被申聞無程又壱ヶ年余も相成り候間何分相応
働方いたし度旨達而申出且「リヨーチ」方江罷越し
右之段申述候処然は当分家来分に可致にて薪
をわり水を汲掃除いたし弁当を持て行様之事
を被申付罷在候伝蔵本名筆之丞と申候処この
所之人呼申候を聞候にいつとても「テンソ」或は「デンゾウ」

神仏を手を合わせて拝むかという様な手招きをしたので、
その通りにしたという手招きで答えた。すると、また日本の一朱銀二十
枚、二朱判一片、銭一文に和製の煙管一本を取って持って
来て見せたので、これは皆我々の国の物であると手招きで答えた
ところ、確かに日本人であると理解した。これは十余年前に大坂の商
船がこの地に漂流したことがあり、その時から持ち伝えているものだと後で聞いた。
さて、詮議が済んで、各人「ハスダラ」という銀銭一枚ずつもらい、
万次郎については「フイチセル」が希望して本国へ連れて行きたいと申し
出たため、万次郎の心次第だと答えると、十分に世話をするので
少しも気遣い無用との旨を四人の者に申し聞かせ、万次郎を

の名前もおおよそ覚えたので、なかなか世話になることを気の
毒に思い、相応の働きをしたいと申し出たところ、奉行より
預かりの身であるからその必要はなく、心配せず暮らすよう懇に
言われた。間もなくまた一年余りも経ったので、何分にも相応の
働きをしたいと強く申し出、かつ「ガバナー」の所へ行って
右の件を申し述べたところ、それなら当分家来として、薪
を割り水を汲み掃除をし弁当を持参するような仕事
を言い付けられることになった。伝蔵の本名は筆之丞というが、この
地の人が呼ぶのを聞くと、いつも「テンソ」或いは「デンゾウ」

whereupon they definitively understood they were Japanese. They later learned that over ten years earlier, a merchant
ship from Osaka had drifted to this place, and these items had been kept since that time.
Now, after the inquiry was completed, each person received one silver coin called "dollar,"
and regarding Manjirō, "Whitfield" expressed his desire to take him to his home country.
When told it was up to Manjirō's wishes, and assured that he would be well cared for
with no need for concern, this was explained to the four men, and Manjirō was
placed aboard the whaling ship, which then departed. At this time Manjirō was fourteen years old.

As for the four men, they were entrusted to a person like a subordinate official of the "Governor," and gradually received care,
but since language did not communicate, they spent their days in vain.
However, by the summer of the following Tiger year, language finally began to communicate, and they had roughly
learned the names of various things, so feeling sorry for receiving so much care,
they requested to do appropriate work. The magistrate kindly
told them that since they were in his custody, this was unnecessary and they should live without worry.
Before long, another year or more had passed, so they earnestly requested to do appropriate
work, and went to the "Governor's" residence to
explain this matter. It was decided that they would temporarily work as servants, splitting firewood,
drawing water, cleaning, and carrying lunch boxes.
Although Denzō's real name was Fudenosuke, when listening to how the local
people called him, it was always "Tenso" or "Denzō."
