と申様に相聞へ候ニ付則傳蔵に革名仕候寅右衛門
義ハ当所大工之方へ被相雇追々弟子ニ相成り申候重
助ハ「リヨーチ」方ニ罷在候処午ノ歳冬より病気再発
仕り難義ニ及候間「リヨーチ」ノ世話を以湊より三里計り
在方「コウロー」と云所へ参り百姓「テツハン」と申人之方を
宿ニ仕り医師を迎へ養生仕候へ共其験も無之痢
疾之様ニ相成り未之正月終病死仕候近辺之人
ニ様々世話ニ預り「ミンパレカ」と申候僧躰之人に葬式之
義相頼候処御経様之物を読ミなと仕り懇ニ預り臥
棺ニ入れ「カン子ヲへ」と申所へ葬り申候此地之風俗ニ精進
や法事抔申事ハ無之候得共心持を以精進も祭りも墓
参りをも仕候是より兄弟二人「ツワナ」と申人二養育ニ預り
罷在候處「キニカケヲリ」と申此島之殿様「ハナロ」ノ湊より
巡見として此所へ参り右「ツワナ」之家に止宿せられ
兄弟を御前江被召出暮方之義念頃に被相尋候
間こしかた之通を申上何卒少々耕作仕り作間ニ
ハ漁事等もいたし度旨申出候處聴届に相成り「ツ
ワナ」へ何か指図いたし罷帰られ候其後「ツワナ」より
田地配分預り候間兄弟申合浜辺之あき地一ト間
の家を建耕作漁事等仕候釣道具ハ宇佐ニ而釣り
候通りにこしらへ松魚なと多く釣獲申候所之人十つり候
間ニ四五十も釣申候作物は皆芋之類ニ而私ニ限り
貢物之掛り無之且村役人躰之處ニ而人別有之
其節拾五歳以上之者ハ銀銭一枚ツヽ役人へ差出候
現代語訳
と聞こえるので、すなわち伝蔵と改名した。寅右衛門
については当地の大工の所に雇われ、追々弟子になった。重
助は「ガバナー」の所にいたが、午年の冬より病気が再発し
て難儀に及んだので、「ガバナー」の世話で湊より三里ほど
離れた在郷の「コウロー」という所へ行き、百姓の「テツハン」という人の所を
宿にして医師を迎えて養生したが、その効果もなく、痢
疾のようになり、未年の正月に病死した。近辺の人に
様々世話になり、「ミンパレカ」という僧侶のような人に葬式の
件を頼んだところ、お経のようなものを読むなどして懇切に世話され、
棺に入れて「カン子ヲへ」という所に葬った。この地の風俗では精進
や法事などということはないが、心持ちから精進も祭りも墓
参りもした。これより兄弟二人は「ツワナ」という人に養育してもらうことになり、
そこにいたところ、「キニカケヲリ」というこの島の殿様が「ハナロ」の湊より
巡見としてこの所へ来られ、右の「ツワナ」の家に宿泊され、
兄弟を御前に召し出して暮らし方のことを詳しくお尋ねになったので、
これまでの通りを申し上げ、何とか少々耕作をして、農作業の合間には
漁のようなこともしたいと申し出たところ、聞き届けられ、「ツ
ワナ」に何か指図をして帰られた。その後「ツワナ」より
田地の配分を受けたので、兄弟相談して浜辺の空き地に一間四方
の家を建て、耕作や漁業などをした。釣り道具は宇佐で釣った
時と同じように作り、鰹などを多く釣り獲った。現地の人が十匹釣る
間に四、五十匹も釣った。作物は皆芋の類で、私に限っては
貢物の負担はなく、また村役人のような所で人別帳があり、
その際十五歳以上の者は銀銭一枚ずつ役人に差し出す。

and so he was renamed Denzō. As for Toraemon,
he was employed by a local carpenter and gradually became his apprentice. Jū-
suke remained at the "Governor's" residence, but from the winter of the Horse year his illness recurred
and became troublesome, so through the "Governor's" care he went to a rural area called "Cowlow," about three ri
from the port, and made his lodging at the home of a farmer named "Tethan," where a doctor was called and he convalesced, but without effect, and he developed
something like dysentery and died in the first month of the Sheep year. Receiving various
care from nearby people, they requested a monk-like person called "Minister" to handle the funeral
service, who kindly cared for them, reading what seemed like sutras, and placed him
in a coffin and buried him at a place called "Kanjiowe." Though the customs of this land do not include
abstinence or memorial services, they performed abstinence, ceremonies, and grave
visits out of their feelings. From this point the two brothers came under the care and upbringing of a person called "Towana."
While they were there, the lord of this island called "King Kauikeaouli" came from "Honolulu" port
on an inspection tour to this place and lodged at the aforementioned "Towana's" house,
summoned the brothers before him, and inquired in detail about their livelihood.
They reported their circumstances up to that point and requested that they might do some farming and
fishing during intervals in agricultural work. This was granted, and he
gave some instructions to "Towana" before returning. Afterward, they received
an allocation of farmland from "Towana," so the brothers consulted together and built a one-ken square
house on vacant land near the shore, and engaged in farming and fishing. They made fishing tackle
the same way as when they fished at Usa, and caught many bonito and other fish. While local people caught ten fish,
they caught forty or fifty. The crops were all types of potatoes, and in their case there was
no burden of tribute, and there was a population register kept by village official-type authorities,
on which occasion those fifteen years and older presented one silver coin each to the officials.
