わきて桑の若芽（わかめ）を喰（く）ひ枯木（かれき）のごとくなす事あり此時 虫送（むしおく）りをするに
国々（くに〴〵）にて色々（いろ〳〵）の法（はふ）あり中国（ちうごく）辺（へん）は蚕神（さんじん）に祈（いの）り又は産土神（うぶすな）へ詣（まうて）などし

と囃子立（はやしたて）桑の辺（ほとり）を廻（まは）り川ある方へ送（おく）り出す是をむしおくりといふ又桑の
木にさめといふ病（やまひ）出来（でき）木の皮（かは）紫色（むらさきいろ）になり枯（か）るゝことあり是は雨天（うてん）の
節（せつ）竹（たけ）のへら或はさゝらの類にて磨（みがき）とるべし

養蚕（やうさん）の諸道具（しよだうぐ）は図（づ）のごとくして悉（こと〴〵）く冬（ふゆ）の内（うち）に用意（ようい）すべし又 繭（まゆ）作（つく）ら
す時につかふ藁（わら）の類 柴（しば）薪（おどろ）にいたるまで前方（まへかた）に用意（ようい）して湿気（しつけ）なき様

【右丁】
特に桑の若芽を食い荒らして、枯木のようにしてしまうことがある。この時に虫送りをするのだが、国々で色々な方法がある。中国地方では蚕神に祈ったり、あるいは産土神へ参詣などし、藁人形あるいは藁馬などを作って、これに桑の虫を少し取って乗せ、鉦太鼓あるいは法螺貝、笛などを吹き立て、子供や童たちが大勢集まり、「桑の虫を送った、沖の方へ行け行け」と囃子立てて、桑の辺りを回り、川がある方へ送り出す。これを虫送りという。また桑の木に「さめ」という病気ができ、木の皮が紫色になって枯れることがある。これは雨天の時に竹のへらあるいは篠竹の類で磨き取るべきである。

養蚕諸道具の事

養蚕の諸道具は図のようにして、ことごとく冬の内に用意すべきである。また繭を作らせる時に使う藁の類、柴薪に至るまで前もって用意して、湿気がないように乾燥させて置くべきである。

They particularly devour young mulberry shoots, making them look like dead trees. At such times, insect expulsion is performed, with various methods existing in different regions. In the Chugoku region, people pray to the silkworm deity or visit their tutelary deity, make straw dolls or straw horses, place a few mulberry insects on them, and while beating gongs and drums or blowing conch shells and flutes, children and youngsters gather in large numbers, chanting "Send away the mulberry insects, go to the offing!" while parading around the mulberry trees and sending them toward rivers. This is called insect expulsion. There is also a disease called "same" that affects mulberry trees, turning the bark purple and causing them to wither. During rainy weather, this should be scraped off with bamboo spatulas or similar bamboo implements.

On Various Tools for Sericulture

The various tools for sericulture should be prepared entirely during winter as shown in the diagram. Also, straw and brushwood fuel used when silkworms make cocoons should be prepared in advance and kept dry to prevent moisture.
