廉薑 甘石蘭
和俗では錦鶏蘭ともいう。人家でまれに植える。冬も枯れない。葉は白芨に似ているがより短く、また杜若（青のくまたけらん）の苗に似ているが幅広く、淡黄色の斑点がある。そのため、またほしいわらんとも言う。根のそばに一本の茎を生じ、高さは一尺ほど。先端に五、七個の萼がある。形は白芨に似て黄色である。根は一年に一塊を生じる。形は螺に似て緑色で、多くが連なって生える。根の味は辛く、唐辛子のようである。この植物について神田氏の説によると、紀州の山中に自生があり、村民が根を採って生のまま野菜に加え、香味を助ける。辛くて気が香ばしく、わさびに似ているという。

Alpinia (renkyo) Sweet stone orchid
Also called "golden pheasant orchid" in common parlance. Rarely cultivated in homes. Does not wither in winter. The leaves resemble those of bletilla but are shorter, and also resemble the seedlings of iris (blue iris), but are broader with pale yellow spots. Therefore, it is also called "star ivy orchid." A single stem grows beside the root, about one shaku (30cm) in height. At the tip are five to seven calyxes. The shape resembles bletilla but is yellow in color. The root produces one bulb per year. The shape resembles a spiral shell and is green in color, with many growing in clusters. The taste of the root is pungent, like chili pepper. According to Mr. Kanda's explanation about this plant, it grows wild in the mountains of Kishu Province, where local people harvest the roots and add them raw to vegetables to enhance flavor. It is pungent with a fragrant aroma, similar to wasabi.
