On the second day of the seventh month, the Russian general Essernitzeff led his troops to enter Châlons prefecture (a place in France). However, the people of the prefecture mistook them for enemy forces and attempted to defend against them. Angered by this, Essernitzeff commanded his soldiers to kill those people and destroy their houses as punishment for their futile opposition, then unleashed his troops in a violent intrusion.
