(Continued from the previous page) Since this work was done hastily, it naturally cannot be said to contain few errors. Moreover, given the lack of chemicals and instruments, it goes without saying that there are many omissions. I still hope to wait for another day to conduct more precise experiments. The innkeeper then said again: "Since ancient times, no one has ever known the composition of this spring. Now, for the first time, it has been made clear in detail. Furthermore, since this book also records the bathing methods and their effects, it should truly serve as an essential reference for this hot spring resort. Why should there be any time to debate its thoroughness or lack thereof?" And so, at his urging, I entrusted it to the block-printer (publisher). I would consider it a great fortune if readers would refrain from condemning me for my careless work.

Methods of Analysis
This spring is colorless and transparent, and its salty taste is almost like that of seawater. When a piece of blue litmus paper was placed in the steam of the hot spring, it turned slightly red. However, when the spring water cooled down, no such color change occurred at all. From this, it was determined that a small amount of carbonic acid gas (CO₂) was present in the steam. In addition to this, several other tests were conducted, but no free acids or free alkalis were found, and it was confirmed that the spring is an entirely neutral saline spring.
One thousand parts of this spring water were taken and boiled to evaporate the water content, yielding ninety-four parts of white solid matter adhering to the bottom of the pot.
