○新吉原五丁町は、地震が鳴動するやいなや、遊郭の家々が一円に揺れ潰れ、火炎が燃え盛って八方より燃え出し、廓中が一面の火事となった。そのため、裏々の跳ね橋を下ろす暇もなく、また、たまたま下ろそうとする者があっても、跳ね橋が損傷していて渡すことができなかった。大門だけが唯一の出口であったため、煙に巻かれ、火に焼かれ、家に押し潰され、また梁を避けようとして物に挟まれ、幸いにして命が無事な者であっても、屋根を壊し壁を破って助け出す人がなければ、空しく火の来るのを待って焼死するほかなかった。このような状況であったから、負傷者・死者は夥しく、その後四、五日の間は、死人がなおあちこちに横たわり、親を尋ね子を尋ねる者が絶えず、まことに目も当てられない有様であったという。遊女の死者は八百三十一人、客その他ここへ来ていた者四百五十人余り、茶屋または廓中の諸商人・芸人など、すべて千四百人余り、総じて死者二千七百余人といわれる。土蔵は一か所も残らず、西河岸は少々残り、五十間片側が残った。

○ No sooner had the earthquake begun to rumble than the pleasure houses of Shin-Yoshiwara's five districts (Gochōmachi) collapsed in their entirety, flames erupted from all directions, and the entire quarter was engulfed in fire. The drawbridges at the rear of the quarter could not be lowered in time, and even when someone attempted to lower one, the bridges were too damaged to be crossed. As the Great Gate (Ōmon) was the only exit, people perished — overwhelmed by smoke, consumed by flames, crushed under collapsed buildings, or trapped beneath beams they had tried to dodge. Even those fortunate enough to be alive had no one to tear through rooftops or break down walls to rescue them, and so they had no choice but to await the approaching flames and burn to death. The number of casualties and fatalities was enormous. For four or five days afterward, the dead lay scattered here and there throughout the quarter; people searched desperately for their parents, for their children — it was a sight too dreadful to behold. The number of courtesans who perished was 831; clients and others who had been visiting the quarter numbered more than 450; teahouse workers, merchants, entertainers, and others throughout the quarter totaled more than 1,400 — bringing the grand total of the dead to more than 2,700, it is said. Not a single storehouse (dozō) survived; a small portion of the western riverbank (Nishi-gashi) remained, along with one side of the fifty-ken frontage.
