○新吉原五丁町は地震が鳴動するとともに、遊郭一帯が揺れ崩れ、炎が激しく八方から燃え出して、廓中一面が火事となった。そのため裏手の跳ね橋を下ろす暇もなく、また偶然下ろそうとする者がいても跳ね橋が損傷して渡ることができず、大門一か所だけが出口となったため、煙に巻かれ火に焼かれ家に潰され、また梁を避けきれずに挟まれた。幸いにして命が無事だった者でも、屋根を壊し壁を破って助け出す人がいなければ、むなしく火がやって来るのを待って焼死した。このような状況であったため、負傷者・死者が非常に多く、その後四、五日の間は死人がなおそこここに横たわり、親を探し子を探し、実に目も当てられない有様であった。遊女の死者は八百三十一人、客その他この場所に来ていた者が四百五十人余り、茶屋または廓中の諸商人・芸人等すべて千四百人余り、総計死者二千七百余人という。土蔵は一か所も残らず、西側の河岸が少々残り、五十軒ほど片側だけが残った。

○In the five districts of Shin-Yoshiwara, as soon as the earthquake rumbled, the entire pleasure quarter was shaken and collapsed, with flames blazing fiercely from all directions, turning the whole district into a conflagration. Therefore, there was no time to lower the drawbridges at the back alleys, and even when someone happened to try to lower them, the drawbridges were damaged and could not be crossed. Since only the Ōmon (Great Gate) served as the exit, people were engulfed in smoke, burned by fire, crushed by houses, or trapped by beams they could not avoid. Even those fortunate enough to survive would die by burning while helplessly waiting for the fire to reach them, if there was no one to rescue them by breaking through roofs and walls. Under such circumstances, the wounded and dead were extremely numerous. For four or five days afterward, corpses still lay scattered here and there, with people searching for parents and children - truly a sight too horrible to behold. The courtesans who died numbered 831, customers and others who had come to this place numbered over 450, and teahouse operators, various merchants, and entertainers in the quarter totaled over 1,400 - a grand total of over 2,700 deaths. Not a single storehouse remained, with only a small portion of the western embankment surviving and about fifty buildings remaining on one side.
