はやせしが四五日をへて此地しん
あり大地しんいらんとする時井の

○牛込へんに一人の狐（きつね）つきありけるが

現代語訳
○御蔵前通りの天王橋のほとりに、何某とか呼ばれる水茶屋があった。あるとき、駕籠かきの者がこの店へ休もうと、客を乗せたまま入口の土台をまたいだところ、沓脱ぎの土間を踏み抜いてしまった。驚いてこれを見ると、清水がこんこんと湧き出ている。人々は不思議に思い、「これこそまさしく弘法大師の御水であろう」と言ってはやし立てたが、四、五日を経て、この地に地震があった。大地震が起ころうとする時、井戸の水が涸れたり、あるいは濁ったりするのは、地中の水脈が乱れるためだと思われる。この水もまた水脈が乱れて常を失い、縁もゆかりもない場所へ湧き出したものであろうか。

○牛込あたりに、一人の狐憑きの者がいた。当年の十月一日に、口走って言うには、「大変なことがあるゆえ、十八日までは（ここへ）帰り来ない」と言い、止めようとする人を振り払って一散に駆け出し、どこへ行ったか帰って来なかった。翌二日に大地震があり、その者の居宅はもちろん、揺れ潰れた家が夥しく、押し潰されて死ぬ者が多かった。しかるに、かの者は帰って来ないとして、この辺りで野宿する者が今もやまないとのことである。
英語訳
○ Near Tennō Bridge on Onkuramae Street, there was a water teahouse (mizuchaya) known by the name of a certain proprietor. One day, some palanquin bearers entered the shop intending to rest while still carrying their passenger. As one of them stepped over the threshold at the entrance, he broke through the earthen floor of the shoe-removal area (kutsunugi no doma). To their surprise, when they looked at what had happened, pure, clear water was welling up in a steady flow. The people marveled at this and spread word, saying, "Surely this must be the sacred water of Kōbō Daishi!" However, four or five days later, an earthquake struck that very location. When a great earthquake is about to occur, well water sometimes dries up or becomes turbid — this is believed to be due to disturbances in the underground water veins. Perhaps this water, too, had its underground veins disturbed and, having lost its normal course, came bubbling up in a place where it had no reason to appear.

○ In the vicinity of Ushigome, there was a person who was possessed by a fox spirit. On the first day of the tenth month of that year, this person suddenly blurted out: "Because something terrible is going to happen, I will not return here until the eighteenth day." With those words, the person shook off those who tried to restrain them and dashed away, and — no one knew where they went — they did not return. The following day, the second, the great earthquake struck. The person's own residence, along with a great many other houses that were shaken to the ground, crushed many people beneath them, resulting in numerous deaths. And yet, as that person still has not returned, there are apparently people in the area who continue to sleep outdoors to this day, not ceasing even now.
