陰陽（いんやう）の二｜気（き）は天地（てんち）万物（ばんもつ）の根元（こんげん）にして陰陽天にたゝかへば雷（らい）
をなし地中（ちちう）にあれは地震（じしん）をなす然（しか）るに元禄十六年の大地
震 近（ちか）くは越後（ゑちご）の国｜三条（さんでう）信州（しんしう）善光寺（ぜんくわうぢ）大地震又京大坂
の地震つなみのこときは往古（わうこ）よりいとまれなる所なり于茲（こゝに）安政

を潰（つぶ）し土蔵（くら）を倒（たを）しそれがために押（おし）に打れ又は出火（しゆつくわ）に身を
焼（やか）れ死亡（しぼう）するもの数万人（すまんにん）に及（およ）ぶ前代（ぜんだい）より未（いま）だかくの如き
ためしを？覚（おぼ）えす誠（まこと）に希代（きたい）の珍事（ちんじ）なり

親子（しんし）兄弟（けいてい）をうしなひ歎（なけ）きかなしむ事｜実（じつ）に目も当られぬ
有様（ありさま）也｜幸（さいは）ひにして九死（きうし）をまぬかれたるもの左にしるす歌（うた）を書（かき）て
髪（かみ）のうちにはさみ置ば怪我（けが）せさりといふ地震のましなひ也
○水神（すゐじん）のつげに命（いのち）をたすかりて六分（ろくぶ）の内（うち）に入るぞうれしき
熊野ごんげんの御つげ地震の難をよけるまじなひ
○棟（むね）八（や）つ門（もん）か九（こゝの）つ戸（と）がひとつ身はいざなぎの内（うち）にとそいれ
現代語訳
陰陽の二気は天地万物の根元であり、陰陽が天において争えば雷となり、地中にあれば地震となる。さて、元禄十六年の大地震、近くは越後国三条、信州善光寺の大地震、また京・大坂の地震・津波のごときは、往古より極めてまれなことである。ここに安政二乙卯年十月二日亥の上刻、関東の諸国に大地震があり、家を潰し、土蔵を倒し、そのために押し潰され、あるいは出火により身を焼かれて死亡した者は数万人に及んだ。前代よりいまだかくのごときためしを覚えず、誠に希代の珍事である。
大江戸四里四方の内、家・蔵の損壊・倒壊および死者の総数は以下の通りである。
町数 四千五十七ヶ町が被害を受け、このうち潰れた家は六万八千八十軒余
土蔵 十万七千余戸前が損じた
御大名御屋敷 三百余軒が損じた
出火の数 三十八口
死者 二十二万九千余人
親子・兄弟を失い、嘆き悲しむ有様は、実に目も当てられない。幸いにして九死に一生を得た者は、以下に記す歌を書いて、髪の中に挟み置けば怪我をしないという、地震のまじないである。
○水神のつげに命をたすかりて、六分の内に入るぞうれしき
熊野権現の御告げによる、地震の難を避けるまじない。
○棟八つ門が九つ、戸がひとつ、身はいざなぎの内にとぞ入れ

The two forces of Yin and Yang are the fundamental source of all things in heaven and earth. When Yin and Yang clash in the heavens, they produce thunder; when they stir within the earth, they produce earthquakes. Now, the great earthquake of Genroku 16 (1703), and more recently the great earthquakes at Sanjō in Echigo Province and at Zenkōji in Shinshū, as well as earthquakes and tsunamis in Kyoto and Osaka — such events have been exceedingly rare since ancient times. And yet, on the second day of the tenth month of Ansei 2, the Year of the Wood Rabbit (1855), in the upper hour of the Boar (around 10 p.m.), a great earthquake struck the provinces of the Kantō region, crushing houses and toppling earthen storehouses. As a result, those who were crushed beneath collapsing structures, or whose bodies were burned in the fires that broke out, numbered in the tens of thousands. Nothing like this has ever been recorded since time immemorial — truly it is an extraordinary and unprecedented event.
Within the four-ri radius of Great Edo, the total damage to houses and storehouses, and the number of deaths, are as follows:
Number of districts: 4,057 districts damaged; of these, 68,080-odd houses completely destroyed
Earthen storehouses: over 107,000 storehouse-fronts damaged
Daimyō residences: over 300 damaged
Number of fires: 38 outbreaks
Deaths: 229,000-odd people
Parents losing children, children losing parents, brothers and sisters torn apart — the grief and sorrow was truly a sight too painful to behold. For those who were fortunate enough to escape death by a hair's breadth, it is said that writing down the following verse and tucking it inside one's hair will protect one from injury. This is a charm against earthquakes:
○ By the divine warning of the Water God, my life was saved — how joyous it is to be counted among the six parts (the survivors)!
A charm to ward off the calamity of earthquakes, by divine oracle of the Kumano Gongen:
○ Eight ridgepoles, nine gates, one door — place thyself within the realm of Izanagi!
