現代語訳
陰陽の二気は天地万物の根源であり、陰陽が天で戦えば雷となし、地中にあれば地震となす。そうして元禄十六年の大地震、近くは越後国三条、信州善光寺の大地震、また京都大坂の地震津波のようなことは、古来よりとても稀なところである。ここに安政二乙卯年十月二日亥の上刻、関東諸国で大地震があり、家を潰し土蔵を倒し、それがために圧死したり、また出火によって身を焼かれ死亡する者が数万人に及んだ。前代より未だかくの如き例を覚えず、誠に希代の珍事である。
大江戸四里四方の内、家蔵損壊および死人の大数は左の通り

親子兄弟を失い嘆き悲しむこと、実に目も当てられぬ有様である。幸いにして九死に一生を得た者は、左に記す歌を書いて髪の中に挟み置けば怪我をしないという地震の呪いである。

英語訳
The two forces of yin and yang are the origin of all things in heaven and earth. When yin and yang clash in the heavens, they create thunder; when they are in the earth, they create earthquakes. Thus, the great earthquake of Genroku 16, and more recently the great earthquakes at Sanjo in Echigo Province and at Zenkoji in Shinano Province, as well as the earthquakes and tsunamis in Kyoto and Osaka, have been extremely rare occurrences since ancient times. Here, on the second day of the tenth month of Ansei 2 (year of the wood rabbit), during the early hours of the boar, there was a great earthquake throughout the Kanto provinces that destroyed houses and toppled storehouses, causing tens of thousands to die from being crushed or burned in fires. There has never been such an example in previous eras - it was truly an unprecedented calamity.
Within the four ri square area of Great Edo, the numbers of damaged houses and storehouses, and the dead, are as follows:
Number of districts: 4,057 districts damaged, of which over 68,080 houses collapsed
Storehouses: Over 107,000 damaged
Daimyo residences: Over 300 damaged
Number of fires: 38 locations
Dead: Over 229,000 people
The sight of people losing parents, children, and siblings and grieving in sorrow was truly unbearable to witness. Those fortunate enough to escape near-certain death are told that if they write the following songs and place them in their hair, they will not be injured - these are earthquake charms:
