八方より猛火炎々（まうくわえん〴〵）
と燃上（もえあが）りほのほ天を
こがす出火（しゆつくわ）はじめ三十八口
なりしが近きは燃つゝき

翌三日｜午刻（うまのこく）全（まつた）く鎮火（ちんくわ）なす

現代語訳
# 安政二年（1855）卯年十月二日夜、四つ時（午後十時頃）
大地震が起こり揺れ始め、土蔵は傾き、家屋は数えきれないほど倒壊した。老若男女の死亡者数は把握しきれないほどであった。この時、四方八方から猛火が炎々と燃え上がり、炎は天を焦がすほどであった。出火箇所は最初三十八か所であったが、近くの火が燃え続けて合わさり三十二か所となり、さらに二十七か所となった。その後、次第に焼け広がり、翌三日の午の刻（正午頃）にようやく完全に鎮火した。さらにこれによって命を落とした者は夥しく、御府内市中（江戸市内）の人民が一瞬のうちに命を失った者は数万人にのぼり、まことに前代未聞のことであった。

# The Second Year of Ansei (1855), Tenth Month, Second Day, at the Hour of the Pig (approximately 10 p.m.)
A great earthquake struck, and shaking began. Storehouses tilted, and houses collapsed in countless numbers. The number of deaths among men and women, young and old, was beyond reckoning. At this time, fierce fires blazed up in all directions, with flames so intense they seemed to scorch the very heavens. The number of fires that broke out was initially thirty-eight, but as nearby fires merged and continued to burn, the count became thirty-two, and then twenty-seven. The fires then gradually spread further, and it was not until the Hour of the Horse (around noon) on the following third day that they were completely extinguished. The number of people who lost their lives as a result of all this was immense — those within the city of Edo who perished in an instant numbered in the tens of thousands. It was truly an event without precedent in all of history.
