現代語訳
○度重なる余震のたびに、またも大地震が来るのではないかと人々は恐れ、大通りに畳を敷き、屏風・戸・障子、あるいは大事なものを守るためにと持ち出した荷物などを積み上げて囲いを作り、そこで寝るのが一般的となった。こうして七、八日ほど経つと、地震がようやく収まってくるにしたがい、追い追い野陣（屋外で寝泊まりすること）をするものも少なくなっていった。十四日には終日雨が降り、この時に至って野陣はやんだ。

○ With each repeated aftershock, people feared that yet another great earthquake might strike. They spread tatami mats out on the main streets, piled up folding screens, doors, shoji screens, and the belongings they had carried out for safekeeping, fashioning makeshift enclosures in which to sleep. This became the common practice for everyone. After seven or eight days had passed, as the earthquakes gradually subsided, fewer and fewer people remained camping outdoors. On the fourteenth day, rain fell throughout the entire day, and it was at this point that the outdoor encampments finally ceased.
