┃長さ百二十間、広さ百二十間の内に堀をめぐらし、深さ三間、広さ五間の堀を掘って、この土を内の屋敷へ突き上げたい時、この堀の土にて屋敷はどのくらい突き上がるかというと

【中巻四十六丁表】
〔欠損部分〕…堀の広さ五間引けば百十五間有り。これに〔四を掛ければ〕四百六十間になる。〔これに広さ五間を掛ければ二千三百坪、〕これに深さ三間を掛ければ〔六〕千九百坪〔となる。〕これを右に別に置いて、○また左に百二十間と置き、堀の幅五間ずつ両側にて引けば百十間になる。これを左右に置いて掛ければ一万二千百坪有り。これにて右の六千九百坪を一万二千百坪にて割れば五七〔分〕二〔厘〕となる。これに六尺五寸を掛ければ三尺七寸六厘三毛、突き上げてよしというなり。

┃When a moat is dug around a square plot 120 ken by 120 ken, with the moat being 3 ken deep and 5 ken wide, and one wishes to use this excavated soil to raise the level of the inner mansion grounds, by how much will the mansion grounds be raised?

[Damaged/missing text]…Subtract the moat width of 5 ken to get 115 ken. Multiply this by 4 to get 460 ken. [Multiply by the width of 5 ken to get 2,300 tsubo,] then multiply by the depth of 3 ken to get [6,]900 tsubo. Set this aside on the right. ○Also, place 120 ken on the left; subtract 5 ken of moat width on each of the two sides to get 110 ken. Place these on the left and right and multiply to get 12,100 tsubo. Divide the right-hand value of 6,900 tsubo by 12,100 tsubo to get 0.57[02…]. Multiply this by 6 shaku 5 sun to get 3 shaku 7 sun 6 rin 3 mō — this is the amount by which the grounds are raised.
