**Six-sun square timber** [Diagram: 6-sun square, two-kan length timber, price 4 monme 2 bu]
**Flat timber (boards)** [Diagram: width 2 shaku, thickness 8 sun 5 bu, length three-kan timber]
Problem: Using the price of 4 monme 2 bu for a six-sun square two-kan timber as a reference unit rate, what would be the price of the flat timber?
○ Price of flat timber: It comes to 29 monme 7 bu 5 rin.
Method: Multiply 8 sun 5 bu by 2 shaku to get 17. Multiply this by 3 kan to get 51. Multiply this by 4 monme 2 bu to get 2,142. Set this aside on the right. Then place 6 sun on the left side both horizontally and vertically and multiply to get 36. Multiply this by 20,000 to get 72. Divide the right-hand value of 2,142 by this to get 29 monme 7 bu 5 rin.

**Chapter 28: On Bundling Cypress Bark (Hiwata) with Rope (also includes bamboo bundling)**
Problem: When purchasing 200 bundles of cypress bark (hiwata), one "shime" (締め) is defined as one bundle bound with a 5-shaku rope. When binding the 200 bundles with 5-shaku rope,
[Diagram: Cypress bark]
when each bundle is 5 sun short [in circumference], how many bundles can be bound with a 4-shaku-5-sun rope to come out even?
Answer: With a 4-shaku-5-sun rope, it comes out even at 246 bundles and 9 bu.
Method: Divide 5 shaku by the circular constant (en-kai hō) 3.16 to get 1 shaku 5 sun 8 bu 2 rin 2 mō. Place this both horizontally and vertically and multiply to get the area of a 1-sun square cross-section...
