計算法として、二割三分四厘五毛、これに十（割）を加えると十二割三分四厘五毛となる。これに二匁をかけると、二匁四分六厘九毛と知るべし。

《題：第二十九 屋根の葺き板の積もり、ならびに勾配・垂木の事》
┃屋根坪がある、あるいは三十六坪ある時、こけら葺きにして葺き板がいくら要るかという問題。軒にて足（あし）一寸、中にて一寸五分、棟にて二寸ある時、三ヶ所を合わせて平均一寸五分ずつの足（重ね代）である。板の幅は三寸ある板にて、右の三十六坪に板はいくら要るかというに、
三万三千八百枚入るという。
計算法：一坪の法（係数）四二二五、これに三十六坪をかけると一五二一〇〇（一五二一百）となる。これを右に別に置く。○また左に、板の幅三寸に葺き足（重ね代）一寸五分、これをかけると四五となる。これで右の一五二一〇〇を割ると、三万三千八百枚と知るべし。

《Title: Problem 29 — Calculating Roof Shingles, and Matters of Roof Pitch and Rafters》
┃When a roof has a certain area — say, 36 tsubo — and is to be shingled with kokerabuki (thin-shingle roofing), how many shingles are needed? When the overlap (ashi) is 1 sun at the eaves, 1 sun 5 bu in the middle, and 2 sun at the ridge, the average overlap across the three positions is 1 sun 5 bu each. Using boards that are 3 sun wide, how many boards are needed for the said 36 tsubo?
The answer is 33,800 shingles.
Method: The coefficient for one tsubo is 4,225. Multiplying this by 36 tsubo gives 152,100. Set this aside on the right. ○ On the left: multiply the board width of 3 sun by the overlap (ashi) of 1 sun 5 bu, giving 4.5 [square sun]. Divide the right-hand value of 152,100 by this, and you will find 33,800 shingles.
