あるいは左に回転し、あるいは速く転じ、あるいは遅く転じて、一定のきまりがない。
しかるに今、碓車【うすぐるま】が止まらないように、地球が一定に回転して昼夜の時刻数を違えず、日輪を一周して四季の気候を誤らないなどと、種々の怪しい説を唱えるにしても、上に述べた機関（からくり）を設けなければ、この説は成り立つはずがない。『談天』第十一巻に「後世の格致家（自然科学者）の精密な思考と細かな観察を待たなければならない」とある。今この自転の定まった規則についての論も、また後世の妄説家を待って定めようとするのであろうか。一笑に付すべきである。
第二難 彗星は他の気（領域）を破る
西洋の説に言う。彗星はその軌道が楕円形であって、遠く遊星の天の外方より来たり去るものとする。すなわち『談天』第十一巻に、「古人は彗星の運行について、速度が甚だ大きく法則がなく、常には隠れていて忽然と現れ、光が甚だ大きいこともあって、恒星とは異なるため、常に災異（わざわい）の前兆とみなし、人々はみなこれを恐れ、智者といえどもこれを免れなかった。今始めてその運行が、太陽を巡る諸星と同じく、かつて法則がないことはなかったと知った」とある。また言う、「彗星が運行する楕円の軌道は、大体において極めて長い」と。

Yet now, claiming that the Earth rotates steadily like an unceasing millwheel, never deviating in the number of hours of day and night, and completing one circuit around the Sun without error through the four seasons' climates—no matter how many such fantastical theories are put forward, without installing the mechanical apparatus (mechanism) described above, this theory cannot hold. In Volume 11 of the *Tantan* [*談天*, "Discourse on the Heavens"], it states: "One must await the precise thinking and meticulous observation of natural philosophers of future generations." Should this theory regarding the fixed regularity of the Earth's rotation also be left for future fabricators of wild theories to determine? It deserves nothing but laughter.
**Second Challenge: Comets Break Through Other Spheres (Regions)**
Western theory states: The orbit of a comet is elliptical, and comets are things that come and go from far beyond the celestial sphere of the planets. Namely, in Volume 11 of *Tantan*: "The ancients, regarding the movement of comets—[seeing that] their speed was exceedingly great and seemingly without law, that they were constantly hidden and then suddenly appeared, that their light was sometimes exceedingly brilliant and unlike the fixed stars—therefore always regarded them as omens of disaster and calamity. All people feared them, and even the wise were not exempt from such fear. Now, for the first time, it is known that their movement, like that of the various stars orbiting the Sun, was never without law." It also says: "The elliptical orbit along which a comet travels is generally extremely elongated."
