[Right page] 《Section 29》 Measuring the Volume of a Measuring Box (Masu) 〇 Using the current (Kyoto) masu: 1 to 2 sho 2 go 8 shaku 〇 Using the old masu: 1 to 2 sho 7 go 4 shaku [Figure at lower right] [Top face] 1 shaku 3 sun [Side] 7 sun (height) [Bottom] Inner base diameter: 1 shaku 1 sun Method: Add together the diameter of the upper (circular) opening and the diameter of the lower opening, giving 2 shaku 4 sun. Divide this by two, giving 1 shaku 2 sun. Place this on both sides (i.e., use as both factors) and multiply, giving 144. Multiply this by the height of 7 sun, giving 1,008. Multiply this by the factor for circles, 0.79, giving 796.32. Divide this by the Kyoto masu factor of 648.27, and you will find the answer to be 1 to 2 sho 2 go 8 shaku. [Left page] ※When measuring using the old masu, as described above, add the upper diameter to the lower diameter, giving 2 shaku 4 sun. Divide by two, giving 1 shaku 2 sun. Place this on both sides and multiply; then multiply by the height; then multiply by the circular factor 0.79; then multiply this by 16, and you will find the answer to be 1 to 2 sho 7 go 4 shaku. The calculation shown above is for when the vessel is placed in an approximate (standard) configuration. For vessels whose base is narrower than their circumference (i.e., tapering more steeply), there will be a slight difference when using the method of calculation shown on the right. The precise calculation method is transmitted orally.
