下末 一
子丗人有。内十五人は先腹、残る十五人は当腹也。右之ことく
立ならへて、十にあたるをのけて、又廿にあたるをのけ、廿九人
まてのけて残る一人にあとをゆつりて申といふ時、まゝ母かくの
ことくたてたる也。さてかそへ候へは、先腹乃子十四人まてのき
申時、いま一たひかそへれは、先腹の子みなのき申ゆへに、
一人残りたるまゝ子のいふやうは、あまりはた一双にのき申間、
こゝよりはわれよりかそへられ候へといへは、せひにをよはすして、一人
残りたる先腹の子よりかそへ候へは、当腹の子皆おき先腹一人残る也。

（下末 一）
子供が三十人いる。そのうち十五人は先妻の子、残る十五人は後妻の子である。右の図のように円に並ばせて、十番目に当たる者を除き、また二十番目に当たる者を除き、二十九人まで除いて、最後に残った一人に遺産を譲ろうと言ったとき、継母がこのように（円に）並ばせたのである。さて数えてみると、先妻の子が十四人まで除かれたとき、もう一度数えれば先妻の子がみな除かれてしまうので、残った一人の継子（ままこ）の言うには、「もうあと一双（ひとめぐり）で（先妻の子が皆）除かれますので、ここからは私のところから数えてください」と言ったので、やむを得ず、最後に残っていた先妻の子から数え始めると、後妻の子が皆残り、先妻の子は一人だけ残ることになった。

There are thirty children. Fifteen of them are children of the first wife, and the remaining fifteen are children of the current wife. They are lined up in a circle as shown in the diagram on the right. The plan is to remove every tenth person, then every twentieth, and so on until twenty-nine have been removed, with the estate to be inherited by the last one remaining. It was the stepmother who arranged them in this formation. Now, as the counting proceeds, when fourteen of the first wife's children have been eliminated, one more round of counting would eliminate all the remaining first wife's children. At this point, the stepchild (the last remaining child of the current wife) says: "In just one more round, all the others will be eliminated — so from here, please start counting from my position." Unable to refuse, when counting resumes from the last remaining child of the first wife, all of the current wife's children survive, and only one of the first wife's children remains.
