　私姉聟伴助与申者鉾持町居住罷在候
　右伴助儀去亥十二月十四日病死仕候
　然ㇽ処右跡目之儀今以相極不申候
　尤伴助実弟孫蔵与申者御当地
　殿嶋村ニ罷在候事故病中幷死去
　前後萬端世話仕候儀御座候得者
　同氏文右衛門儀も安堵仕跡目等之儀も
　先達而死去之刻以書中存寄之事
　右孫蔵方江申越候然ㇽ処右返書も
　差越不申追々風聞等承候得者
　跡目之処少々訳相も御座候様承候付
　文右衛門儀茂甚以安心不仕罷在候
　然ㇽ処姉病気之段申越候付右談等も　
　仕度奉願先日罷越候義御坐候
一右孫蔵存念者伴助甥和吉与申者
　存生之内申候趣茂有之候付此者江
　相続為致度旨申之候姉儀成程
　去春伴助申候趣も有之候得共其後
　右和吉迚も未熟者中々跡續無
　覚束旨度々申之候左様之所相更
　姉儀も右和吉義ハ存念不相叶

口上書の覚え

私の姉の婿である伴助という者が鉾持町に住んでおりました。
その伴助は去る亥年十二月十四日に病死いたしました。
ところが、その跡目相続の件について今もって決まっておりません。
もっとも、伴助の実弟である孫蔵という者がこちらの殿嶋村におりますので、病気の間や死去の前後の万事について世話をしたことがございましたので、同氏の文右衛門も安心し、跡目などの件についても先だって死去の際に書面をもって考えを孫蔵のもとへ申し送りました。ところがその返事も送ってこず、だんだんと風聞などを聞くところによると、跡目のところに少々事情もあるように聞いており、文右衛門も甚だ安心できずにおります。

ところで姉が病気だという連絡があったため、そのような相談もしたく、先日参りました次第でございます。

一、その孫蔵の考えでは、伴助の甥である和吉という者について、存命中に申していたこともあったので、この者に相続させたいという趣旨を申しております。姉も確かに去年の春に伴助が申していたこともございましたが、その後、その和吉といっても未熟者で到底跡継ぎは心もとないと度々申しておりました。そのような状況が変わり、姉もその和吉については考えが叶わないので、他で適当な者を探し若〔い者を〕

Memorandum of Oral Statement

My sister's husband, a man called Bansuke, resided in Hokoji-machi.
This Bansuke died of illness on the 14th day of the 12th month of the previous Year of the Boar.
However, the matter of his succession remains undecided to this day.
Since Bansuke's younger brother Magozō resides in Tonoshima village in this area, he took care of various matters during the illness and before and after the death. Therefore, Bunemon of the same family was also relieved, and regarding succession matters, he sent his thoughts in writing to Magozō at the time of the earlier death. However, no reply was sent back, and from various rumors we have been hearing, it seems there are some complications regarding the succession. Bunemon remains quite uneasy about this situation.

Meanwhile, since we received word that my sister was ill, wishing to discuss such matters, I came the other day.

Item: According to Magozō's thinking, regarding a man called Wakichi who is Bansuke's nephew, since there were things said about him while [Bansuke] was alive, he wishes to have this person succeed. My sister indeed recalls that Bansuke spoke of this last spring, but afterward, she repeatedly said that this Wakichi was still immature and succession would be quite unreliable. With such circumstances having changed, since my sister's wishes regarding this Wakichi cannot be fulfilled, [she seeks to] find a suitable person elsewhere and [choose a] young [person]...
