(Continued from previous page) ...as memorial services for Lord Yūshōin were being held, the banner was raised from this day onward. One entry: On the second day of the fifth month, at Zōjō-ji Temple, As the thirty-third anniversary memorial service (kaiki) for Lord Yūshōin was to be conducted, Lord Yoshimaru dispatched as his messenger the Head of the Palace Guard (gosho-in bangashira), Amagata Kazuma (personal name: Tomoyoshi), to the temple's chief priest (bōjō), and offered two pieces of white silver as a condolence gift (kōden). (This had been confirmed by inquiry on the previous day, the first.) Note: Regarding the above condolence offering, an inquiry was made to the caretaker (rusui) of Lord Satsuma-no-kami concerning the duties of Lord Matsudaira Masunosuke, to which the reply came on the twenty-seventh of the previous month that Lord Masunosuke had no such duties until his first formal audience (omemie) was completed. However, as Lord Yoshimaru had previously made an inquiry and offered a condolence gift on the occasion of the memorial service for Lord Shishin'in as well, he made a similar inquiry this time, and having received authorization on the previous day, the first, the offering was duly presented. One entry: On the eleventh day of the same month, a summons was received from the Duty Councilor (goyōban), Lord Hotta Sagami-no-kami (Masasuke), and Lord Munenori dispatched his caretaker (rusui), Ōtani Ichiemon (Yoshitsugu), whereupon the following was announced by written notice (kakitsuke): Regarding Yoshimaru, arrangements are to be made for him to proceed to the Ōoku of the Nishi-no-Maru on the fifteenth of this coming month. That is all. Fifth Month One entry: The fifteenth day of the fifth month (assembly of the escort party at the fifth half-hour [approx. 7:30 a.m.])
