The following is an account of how the Senior Chamberlain (sobashū) Takai Hyōbu-shōsuke (Nobufusa) conveyed the Shōgun's private intentions (go-nai-i). It was circulated via Hitotsubashi.
Hyōbu-shōsuke conveyed the Shōgun's wishes as follows:
"As Hyōbu-no-taifu is also away from Edo at present, [the Shōgun has expressed the wish that] Yoshimaru be called upon from time to time for meetings, and that this be communicated in an informal and unpressured manner — such is the Shōgun's private intention. [Hyōbu-shōsuke] was instructed to convey this matter to Lord Gyōbukyō and his consort (go-renchu-sama). It is considered appropriate that [such visits take place] approximately once a month. In Hyōbu-shōsuke's own view, excepting the extremes of summer heat and winter cold, once a month would be appropriate. Regarding the expression of gratitude for the above: first, it should be conveyed through the senior house elder (go-karō), and then, upon the occasion of the next visit to the castle — which is coming up soon, around the height of summer (doyō) — one should meet with us directly to offer thanks. As for the consort's side, it is considered appropriate that she convey her thanks, without undue formality, through her senior lady-in-waiting (rōjo) to the senior ladies-in-waiting of the Main Keep (Honmaru).
One note: Please also make a point of informing Lord Yoshimaru of the above. Of course, it goes without saying that there is absolutely no question of Lord Hyōbu-no-taifu and his father offering any formal expression of thanks to the authorities (kōgi) [as if this were an official matter]. Please therefore take particular care to convey this point to Tokiwa-bashi. That is all.
Twenty-third day of the sixth month"
