万人の軍兵を持弓矢取事限なし思ひやうゑひぐわ
と申事かきりなし是は今生にての一時の栄花也
さて後の世一大事やすからん事に花の袂（たもと）を
つくろひ廿一度の御とも申其後極楽浄土へ御参
給ふ事疑ひなきもの也爰に八坂の宮に衛門
三郎とて大悪人候へしが御大師八坂の宮へ御参り
被成てはい殿に御腰掛させ給ひて御休被成候得は御
大師之御鉢を八つにわり申ける其みはちをかな
しみ給ひてはさかみやを八わうじの宮といわゝせ

給ふ衛門三郎子を八人持たるを一日取殺さんと
思召候へ共あのやうなる大悪人をは長く物を思はせん
と思召八人の子を八日に取殺し給ふ八塚と申は
いよの国ゑばらと申に有成り衛門三郎是を
見てあせ水をなかしもつといきつて西へなげ
道心をおこし廿一度の御とも申大悪の者なれ
は面をあわせ給わき是にてはかなはじとて
遂に七度廻れは其時に御大師面を合給ひて
我大悪事たる者なれともじゆん逆に廻る事

現代語訳

万人の軍兵を持ち、弓矢を取ることは限りなし。思いようによっては栄華というものは限りなし。これは今生における一時の栄花である。

さて、後の世の一大事が安らかであるように、華やかな袂を整え、二十一度の御供をした。その後、極楽浄土へ御参りになることは疑いのないものである。

ここに八坂の宮に衛門三郎という大悪人がいた。弘法大師が八坂の宮へ御参りになって、拝殿に御腰掛けになって御休みになっていると、弘法大師の御鉢を八つに割ってしまった。その御鉢を悲しまれて、八坂宮を八王子の宮と言わせになった。

衛門三郎は子を八人持っていたが、一日で殺そうと思召しになったが、あのような大悪人には長く物思いをさせようと思召し、八人の子を八日かけて取り殺しになった。八塚というのは伊予国江原というところにある。衛門三郎はこれを見て汗水を流し、もっと息づいて西へ投げ、道心を起こし二十一度の御供をした。大悪の者であるので面を合わせてくださらない。これではかなわないと思って、ついに七度廻ると、その時に弘法大師が面を合わせてくださって「我は大悪事をなした者であるが、順逆に廻ること」

He possessed countless soldiers and his skill with bow and arrow was limitless. Depending on one's perspective, prosperity is indeed endless. However, this is merely temporary worldly glory in this lifetime.

Now, so that the great matter of the afterlife might be peaceful, he arranged his flowery sleeves and served as companion twenty-one times. After this, there was no doubt that he would visit the Pure Land of Amida Buddha.

Here at Yasaka Shrine lived a great villain named Emon Saburō. When Kōbō Daishi visited Yasaka Shrine and sat down to rest in the worship hall, Emon Saburō broke the Master's begging bowl into eight pieces. Grieving over this bowl, the Master renamed Yasaka Shrine as Hachiōji Shrine.

Emon Saburō had eight children, and though the Master initially thought to kill them all in one day, he decided that such a great villain should be made to suffer longer, so he killed the eight children over eight days. The Eight Mounds, as they are called, are located in Ebara in Iyo Province. Seeing this, Emon Saburō shed tears of sweat, became even more agitated, threw himself westward, awakened religious devotion, and served as companion twenty-one times. Being such a great villain, the Master would not show his face to him. Thinking this would not suffice, Emon Saburō finally circled seven times, at which point Kōbō Daishi showed his face and said, "Though I am one who has committed great evil deeds, this matter of circling in forward and reverse order..."
