袖をのべ出してぜんつうじへいだき奉らせ給ふ
それによつてせんつふ寺をたんじやう院と申也
やがてうふ湯をめさせあかのみづをかけさせ給ひ
て御目の内をおかませ給へは左の御目には日光まし
ます右之御目には月光まします御つむりには
大日如来まします左の御手にはこんかうかひ七百
よぞんまします右の御手にはたひぞふかひ五百よぞん
ましますむねとはらとの間には一切経七百よくわん
ましますうしろには廿五のぼさつましますけに明ら

かに見へさせ給ふと思召いつきかしつき奉らせ給ふ
七歳の御年福じゆ丸とつかせ給ふ一首
　　我すまはよもきへはてしぜんつふじふかきちひの法のと

と遊し給ふ十七歳の御とし土佐国五台山えとふらせ
給ふてふへを習はせ給ふ十九の御としいつみの国まき
の尾へのぼらせ給ふ廿の御年御出家に成給ふ其時くう
かひおしやうと付せ給ふ師匠はいわぶちごん僧正三十壱
の御年大和国くめ寺の堂 頭（たう）にて天日経を請取
日本の御修行被成て唐土（とうど）天竺え渡らせ給ふ折節

現代語訳

袖を延べ出して善通寺へ抱いて連れて行かれた。それによって善通寺を誕生院と申すのである。やがて産湯を使わせ、清水をかけて御目の内を拭かせると、左の御目には日光菩薩がいらっしゃり、右の御目には月光菩薩がいらっしゃる。御頭には大日如来がいらっしゃり、左の御手には金剛界七百余尊がいらっしゃり、右の御手には胎蔵界五百余尊がいらっしゃる。胸と腹の間には一切経七百余巻がいらっしゃり、後ろには二十五の菩薩がいらっしゃることが明らかに見えると思われ、いつくしみ慈しんで育てられた。

七歳の御年、福寿丸と名付けられた。一首の歌：
「我が住まう世も消え果てし善通寺　深き誓いの法の灯もし火」
と詠まれた。十七歳の御年、土佐国五台山へ登られて読経を習われた。十九の御年、和泉国槙尾へ登られた。二十の御年、御出家になられた。その時空海和尚と名付けられた。師匠は勤操僧正である。三十一の御年、大和国久米寺の堂頭にて『大日経』を受け取り、日本の御修行を成されて唐土・天竺へ渡られた。その折節

He extended his sleeves and carried him to Zentsuji Temple. For this reason, Zentsuji Temple is also called Tanjōin (Birth Temple). Soon they gave him his ritual bath, and when they poured pure water over him and wiped inside his eyes, in his left eye there was Nikkō Bosatsu (Sunlight Bodhisattva), and in his right eye there was Gakkō Bosatsu (Moonlight Bodhisattva). In his head there was Dainichi Nyorai, in his left hand there were more than seven hundred deities of the Diamond Realm, and in his right hand there were more than five hundred deities of the Womb Realm. Between his chest and abdomen there were more than seven hundred volumes of all sutras, and behind him there were twenty-five bodhisattvas, all clearly visible. Thinking this, [Tokutō Shōnin] lovingly and carefully raised him.

At the age of seven, he was named Fukuju-maru. He composed a poem:
"In this world where I dwell, even when all has vanished at Zentsuji / The lamp of the Dharma burns with deep vows"
At the age of seventeen, he climbed Mount Godai in Tosa Province to study sutra recitation. At nineteen, he climbed Makino-o in Izumi Province. At twenty, he became a monk. At that time he was named Kūkai Oshō (Monk Kūkai). His master was Gonzō Sōjō. At thirty-one, at Kumedera Temple in Yamato Province as the head priest, he received the Dainichi Sutra, completed his religious training in Japan, and then crossed over to Tang China and India.
