一首仏には成人定なき物を姿はならてこゝろこそなれ
と遊し給ふ其時の年号はゑんりやく廿三年きのへ申
唐土しやうりうじけいくわ出しやうに逢（あひ）奉り日本
のくうかい是迄参りしよし申おしやう悦ひ給ふ
然にけいくわ年のよはひ五百八十歳にならせ給ふ御弟子
千人もたせ給ふもの千人をあつめ万部の経をよみ給ふ
くようにとてこがねのそとは高さ三拾三ひろは五
角にいさせ此そとは書ゝる人我か壱の弟子と定
五百八十年おこなひ給ふ五つの宝物寺にすへ渡す

べしと仰ける中にもけいくわの壱の弟子けいしつ
おしやうと申はそとはにのりて書んとし給ふ所を
くうかい御らんじて面日や大国の習か我が国は小国
にて候へとも舟車牛馬などにのるとは聞とそとはに
のるは今か見初也と仰ありて御わらひ被成候へは千人
の弟子たちはいかりをなしそれなる日本のおそう【お僧】
におそれ申せと有けれはくうかいきこしめし《見せ消ち：かよ｜》
ちからおよばす書て御目掛申とてあわんうんを

現代語訳

一首「仏には成人定なきものを、姿はならで心こそなれ」と詠まれた。その時の年号は延暦二十三年甲申である。唐土の青龍寺恵果和尚に拝謁し、「日本の空海、これまで参りました」と申し上げると、和尚は喜ばれた。

さて、恵果は年齢五百八十歳におなりになり、御弟子千人をお持ちになっている。その千人を集めて万部の経を読み、供養として黄金の卒塔婆を高さ三十三尋、五角に造らせた。この卒塔婆に書ける人を我が一の弟子と定め、五百八十年行じてきた五つの宝物を寺に納めて渡すべしと仰せになった。

その中でも恵果の一の弟子恵什和尚という方が卒塔婆に登って書こうとされるところを空海が御覧になって、「面白や、大国の習いか。我が国は小国であるけれども、舟車牛馬などに乗るとは聞くが、卒塔婆に乗るのは今が見初めである」と仰せになって御笑いになったので、千人の弟子たちは怒りをなし、「それなる日本の和僧に恐れ申せ」と言った。空海はこれをお聞きになり、「力及ばず、書いて御目にかけ申そう」とて、阿闍梨の真言を唱えられて、左の御手を高さ三十三尋の金の

英語訳

He composed a poem: "Though there is no fixed form for becoming a Buddha, it is not the physical form but the heart that becomes [enlightened]." The era name at that time was Enryaku 23, year of Kinoe-Saru (804 CE). In Tang China, he met Master Keika (Huiguo) of Shōryūji (Qinglong Temple) and said, "I, Kūkai of Japan, have come this far." The master was pleased.

Now, Keika had reached the age of 580 years and had a thousand disciples. He gathered those thousand people to read ten thousand volumes of sutras, and as an offering, had a golden stupa made, thirty-three fathoms high and pentagonal in shape. He declared that whoever could write on this stupa would be designated as his first disciple, and that he would transfer to the temple the five treasures he had practiced with for 580 years.

Among them, Keika's first disciple, a monk named Keishitsu, climbed the stupa and was about to write on it when Kūkai observed this and said, "How interesting! Is this the custom of great countries? Though our country is small, I have heard of riding in boats, carts, and on oxen and horses, but this is the first time I have seen someone climb a stupa." He laughed, and the thousand disciples became angry, saying, "Fear that Japanese monk!" Kūkai heard this and said, "Though my strength may be insufficient, I shall write it for you to see." He chanted the Ajari mantra and raised his left hand toward the golden [stupa] thirty-three fathoms high.
