上るか多し岩瀬市兵衛父子抔も土蔵の二階の
窓を打破助船に乗り牛込逢坂へ船を着け
命から〳〵にて退れ候由酒井九郎左衛門物語
なり市兵衛は九郎左衛門叔父也諸道具みな
水入河の益に立不申候よし
一右之辺に永見新右衛門方へも水同様に押来所
に前を冬瓜を積たる船通り候間呼掛其船か
せといへ共船頭耳にも聴入す行を主人も申は
あの船頭を打殺し舟をよせよと被申されは
既に打ころさんとする程に船頭無是非船を
差寄けれは女中其外右之船に取乗命助り
被申たり通死身に成たれ能き働尤なる事也
十死一生の所誰か身の上にもか様の事有間敷共
申されす二ツ一ツは時は思ひ切たる致方可有もの也
可心得事也
一笠原才庵は其節在宿なりしか水ひたと押来り
二階の上にて水腰丈に及ふ故才庵云かやうに
水来りては早必死也されとやひ〳〵しなんも
現代語訳
上る者が多かった。岩瀬市兵衛父子なども土蔵の二階の窓を打ち破り、救助船に乗り、牛込逢坂へ船を着けて、命からがら退避したという。これは酒井九郎左衛門の物語である。市兵衛は九郎左衛門の叔父である。諸道具はみな水に浸かって、川の利益にはならなかったという。
一、右の辺りの永見新右衛門方へも水が同様に押し寄せてきたところ、前を冬瓜を積んだ船が通ったので呼びかけて「その船を寄せよ」と言ったが、船頭は耳にも聞き入れずに行くので、主人も「あの船頭を打ち殺して舟を寄せよ」と申されたところ、
既に打ち殺そうとするほどになって、船頭はやむを得ず船を差し寄せたので、女中その他がその船に取り乗って命が助かったのである。通常では死身になるほどでも、良い働きをするのは尤もなことである。十死一生の場所で、誰の身の上にもこのようなことがないとは申せない。二つ一つは時には思い切った行動をとるべきものである。心得ておくべきことである。

Many people climbed up (to escape the water). Iwase Ichibei and his son also broke through the windows of the second floor of their storehouse, boarded a rescue boat, landed the boat at Ushigome Aisaka, and barely escaped with their lives. This is the account told by Sakai Kurozaemon. Ichibei was Kurozaemon's uncle. All their household goods were soaked with water and were of no benefit to the river.
One account tells that water similarly rushed toward Nagami Shinuemon's residence in that area. A boat loaded with winter melons was passing in front, so they called out "Bring that boat over here!" But the boatman paid no heed and continued on. The master then said, "Kill that boatman and bring the boat over!"
Just as they were about to kill him, the boatman had no choice but to bring his boat alongside. The maidservants and others were able to board that boat and their lives were saved. Even when facing near death, such good action is most reasonable. In a place where nine out of ten will die, no one can say that such things will not happen to them. Sometimes one must take decisive action. This is something to keep in mind.
One account tells that Kasahara Saian was at home at that time. Water came rushing in steadily, and even on the second floor the water reached waist-deep. Saian said, "With water coming like this, death is now certain. However, a cowardly death would also be..."
