梁の上などへ竹刀や槍を渡し、その上へ戸や畳、板を載せて、時が過ぎるのを待ちながらかろうじて夜を明かしたという。弥一郎が五月に見舞いに行くと物語るには、水は床上八、九尺程であったということだ。とりわけ曽我七兵衛などは道具も残らず流されてしまったという。外から見ると壁なども大方落ち、土がひび割れて歪んで見えた。目も当てられない有様である。東側の川向こうの武士たちの屋敷も同様の状態である。橋は前にも述べた通り、残らず落ちて向こうへの通り道がなく、言語道断の状況である。
