...said to be requested) ○Bishamon Hall (There is a pine tree about five feet in circumference near the hall, called the Bishamon Pine. Maintained by villagers)
Former family head Hayatarō (Takes the surname Sekiguchi and has served as village headman for generations. According to their family genealogy, Magojirō Tsunekuni, a descendant of Imagawa Shirō Kuniuji who was fourteen generations from Ashikaga Takauji, first took the name Sekiguchi. After several generations, during the Tenshō period there was one called Higo-no-kami Ujiyasu who was known throughout the world as a master horseman. His grandson Hayato Ujiyori was born in Katayama, Niiza District of Musashi Province, and after coming of age served the Chiba clan of Shimōsa Province, later moving to this village and becoming a commoner. During the time of Jizaemon Ujishō, fourth generation from Hayato, the Yūgao Kannon mentioned in records was excavated from his own land. Items said to have been possessed by Hayato - two old spears and one saddle - are still preserved. There is no doubt that since this person, the family has continuously resided in this place for a long time. However, since facts are not recorded in the genealogy, detailed information is unknown. Hayato died in Keichō 7th year at the age of sixty. From then until the present Hayatarō spans ten generations.)
Sarugamata Village
Sarugamata Village is recorded in the Shinpōshō as "Shimōsa Province Katsushika Sarumata Imperial Kitchen 180 chō," so it is known that it was anciently sacred land of Ise Shrine. The Odawara Military Register records "49 rent-mon Kasai Sarumata Kuboji Ōkura-no-jō." The distance from Edo is four ri. The year of land survey, irrigation, etc. are the same as the previous village. There are 113 households. To the south are Shinjuku-machi and Iizuka Village, to the north Togasaki Village across Koai Reservoir, to the east Koai Village and Koai Shinden, to the west two villages of Saitama District Ōseko Shinden across Naka River. East-west about twelve chō, north-south about seven chō. This village has also been imperial domain since the time of [Tokugawa's] entry into the country and remains unchanged today.
Notice Board Stand (Located in the east of the village)
Subdivision names: Honda, Naka-shinden, Saru-shinden (The village is divided into three parts with houses also separated into three locations. However, this is a private division and designation, not official.)
Nishi-no-mae, Miyata, Higashi, Iri-no-mae, Suijin-men, Masu-da, Minami, Hō-da, Shito-maki, Fudesaki, Nishi
Shinden-teigai, Shinmei-mae, Matsuishi, Terada, Kasagi (The above designations are field names within the three subdivisions mentioned earlier)
Naka River (Flows along the western boundary of the village. In ancient times, embankments were built from both shores of this village and opposing Saitama District Ōse Village, and also between downstream Shinjuku-machi and opposing Kameari Village, with sluice gates installed to create reservoirs inside for irrigation of Kasai domain villages, with excess water flowing along the boundary of East Kasai domain to the sea. During the flood of Kan'ei 1st year, these embankments were washed away and collapsed, causing many villages of this domain and others to suffer flood damage, so the river width was widened. However, the water flow remained strong and the embankments difficult to maintain, so in Kyōhō 14th year, Izawa Yasōbei received orders to construct a cut-bank toward the old Tone River flowing north of the village, moved the reservoir here and named it Koai Reservoir, removed the original two embankments and widened their traces, allowing the old Tone River to flow directly and achieving smooth water flow. River width over eighty ken. Here there is a ferry for work and travel. This is the site of the ancient cut-bank, with Saitama District Ōse Village on the opposite shore.) ○Koai Reservoir (Located north of the village. Under the jurisdiction of Shimo-Koai Village, so details of size etc. are described in that village's section)
