ゑつおうがさかんになりてこおうをほろほしたがそのしふんこうをなしてほうひをもろふた事を云それから
ゑつおうもおこりをきわめきゆうしよともたいふんあり花のことくなびじんがしゆんてんにみちてさかん
な事てありつらふか今はのはらとなりてしやこのとふのみしやゑつのくにゝはしやこといふとり
たいふんあるゆへにいふなりこのづはむかしゑつおうのきゆうてんのさまをうつせり

現代語訳

越中懐古

越王勾践呉を破りて
帰る義士家に還りて尽く錦衣
宮女花の如く春殿に満つ
只今惟だ鷓鴣の飛ぶ有るのみ

越王が盛んになって呉王を滅ぼしたが、その功臣功労を成して褒美を受けた事を言う。それから越王も驕りを極め、宮女とも大変多く、花のごとき美人が春殿に満ちて盛んな事でありつらんが、今は野原となりて鷓鴣の飛ぶのみ。越の国には鷓鴣という鳥が大変多くあるゆえに言うなり。この図は昔越王の宮殿の様を写せり。

Remembering the Past in Yue

King Goujian of Yue defeated Wu
Returning loyal retainers all went home in brocade robes
Palace ladies like flowers filled the spring palace
Now only partridges fly here

When the King of Yue became powerful and destroyed the King of Wu, his meritorious retainers achieved great deeds and received rewards. After that, the King of Yue also reached the extreme of arrogance, and had very many palace ladies - beauties like flowers filled the spring palace in magnificent splendor. But now it has become a wasteland where only partridges fly. This is said because there are very many birds called partridges in the country of Yue. This illustration depicts the appearance of the ancient palace of the King of Yue.
