　　王昌齢（おうしょうれい）

秦時の明月漢時の関、万里長征の人いまだ還らず
ただ龍城の飛将をして在らしめば、胡馬をして陰山を度らしめず

今に始まったことではない。秦の時代も漢の時代も同じことだ。遠征といって、朝廷と呼ばれる都を築いて攻めたことがある。その時も合戦に来た者がこの明月を見て故郷のことを思い悲しんだ。漢の時代も来て戦ったが、秦・漢よりこの方帰った者がいない。とかく良い大将がないから胡人が都を脅かす。ただ蝦夷の恐れる飛将軍のような人があれば、胡人が唐へ打ち入ることはあるまい。良い大将のないのは是非もないことだ。この詩は解き易く解き難きの間に妙ありとなむ。

The bright moon of Qin times, the passes of Han times—
Ten thousand li campaigners have not yet returned.
If only we could have the Flying General of Dragon City present,
The barbarian horses would not be allowed to cross the Yin Mountains.

This is nothing new. It was the same in the Qin and Han dynasties. There were times when expeditions built what were called courts (capitals) and attacked. Even then, those who came to battle looked upon this bright moon and grieved, thinking of their homeland. The Han period also came and fought, but since the Qin and Han dynasties, no one has returned. Because there are no good generals, the barbarians threaten the capital. If only there were someone like the Flying General whom the barbarians fear, the barbarians would not invade Tang China. That there are no good generals is unavoidable. This poem has its excellence in being both easy and difficult to interpret.
