現代語訳

李侍郎が常州に赴くのを送る

雪晴れ雲散じて北風寒し
楚水呉山道路難し
今日君を送るには須らく酔いを尽くすべし
明朝相い憶う路漫々

賈至

冬と見えて降った雪が晴れ、雲も晴れ、雪後のことなので北風が吹いて寒く、物寂しい。常州へ行かれるその道は平坦でもなく、道路が険しくて非常に行きにくい道筋である。

今日は酒を勧めるのだから十分に飲んで酔いを尽くされよ。なぜなら明日別れる身なのでもういつ会うことやら分からない。路は漫々と遠いところへ行かれるので、再会することも計り難い。

胡済鼎が言うことには、この詩は王維が元二が安西へ使いするのを送る詩と似ている。きっと「明朝相い憶う路漫々」なることを思うゆえに「今日須らく酔いを尽くすべし」、「西のかた陽関を出でて故人無からん」と思うゆえに「君に勧む更に尽くせ一杯の酒」と言ったのである。

英語訳

Seeing Off Attendant Li as He Goes to Changzhou

Snow clears, clouds scatter, and the north wind is cold,
The waters of Chu and mountains of Wu make the road difficult.
Today in sending you off, we should drink to our heart's content,
Tomorrow when we think of each other, the road will stretch endlessly.

It appears to be winter, with fallen snow now cleared and clouds dispersed. Being after the snow, the north wind blows cold and desolate. The road you are taking to Changzhou is not level ground - it is a very difficult path with treacherous terrain.

Today I urge you to drink sake, so drink fully and become thoroughly intoxicated. For tomorrow we part ways and who knows when we shall meet again. The road stretches endlessly to distant places, so our reunion is uncertain.

Hu Jiding comments that this poem resembles Wang Wei's poem sending off Yuan Er on his mission to Anxi. Surely thinking that "tomorrow when we think of each other, the road will stretch endlessly," he says "today we should drink to our heart's content." Thinking that "west of Yangguan Pass there will be no old friends," he urges "drink once more this cup of wine."
