かくやうろうは西北（にしきた）のかたちやうしやは。とうていのみなみのみつのはてゆへかくやうろうのあるところよりは
まだみなみじや。とうていこのきたの方には江水（こうすい）つゞきなかるゝがかくやうろうより見れはとうていの
こうすいかぎりひかしのかたへつらなりつゞきて。びやう〳〵とせんりにうしをがみちてある。このところ
を舟にのりゆかるゝがおりふし青雲（せいうん）のそらをあをいて北地（ほくち）のみやこの方をのそめは。みやこのそらにあたる【「あたる」は「ある」ヵ】
しびゑんのほしなとが。とをく見へてどこともしれぬ。とも〳〵にみやこからとをいところへきている

空洞（くうとう）となにもない西（にし）の方からきたの方まてさわりはない員外（いんくはい）かいゝふんにして。かくやうから。ちやうしや
までなにもない湖（こ）すいつゝきじやから朝（あさ）舟にのりはんかた【晩方】帰らるゝといわるゝがかくやうあたりでさい。さびしい
にこれよりひかしの長沙南畔（ちようしやなんはん）のあたりへ行（ゆき）たらばいよ〳〵都（みやこ）はとをくなりこゝろほそかろふとなり

現代語訳

岳陽楼にて王八員外が長沙に左遷されるのを重ねて宴別す

江路東に連なる千里の潮
青雲北に望めば紫微遥かなり
道うこと莫かれ巴陵の湖水闊しと
長沙南畔更に蕭条

賈至

岳陽楼は西北の方にあり、長沙は洞庭の南の水の果てなので、岳陽楼のあるところよりはまだ南である。洞庭のこの北の方には江水が続いて流れているが、岳陽楼より見れば洞庭の江水の限り東の方へと連なり続いて、茫々と千里に潮が満ちている。このところを舟に乗って行かれる折に、青雲の空を仰いで北地の都の方を望めば、都の空にある紫微垣の星などが遠く見えてどこともしれない。共々に都から遠いところへ来ている、我も汝も遠いところへ来ている。

空洞として何もない西の方から北の方まで遮るものはない。員外がよい分限で、岳陽から長沙まで何もない湖水続きなので、朝舟に乗り晩方帰られるといわれるが、岳陽辺りでさえ寂しい。これより東の長沙南畔の辺りへ行ったならばいよいよ都は遠くなり心細かろうとなり。

At Yueyang Tower, Holding Another Farewell Banquet for Wang Ba Yuanwai Who is Being Demoted to Changsha

The river route stretches east for a thousand li of tides,
Looking north at blue clouds, the Purple Forbidden Star is distant,
Do not speak of Baling's lake waters being vast—
South of Changsha is even more desolate.

Yueyang Tower is located to the northwest, while Changsha is at the southern edge of Dongting Lake's waters, so it lies even further south than where Yueyang Tower stands. In the northern part of Dongting Lake, river waters flow continuously, and when viewed from Yueyang Tower, the waters of Dongting stretch eastward without end, with tides filling the vast expanse for a thousand li. As one travels by boat through this area and looks up at the blue clouds in the sky, gazing toward the northern capital, the stars of the Purple Forbidden Enclosure above the capital appear distant and indistinct. Both of us have come to this distant place far from the capital.

From the empty west to the north, nothing obstructs the view. Though the Yuanwai holds good rank and fortune, the journey from Yueyang to Changsha crosses nothing but continuous lake waters—one could board a boat in the morning and return by evening, they say. Yet even the Yueyang area feels lonely. When you go further east to the area south of Changsha, the capital will become even more distant and your heart will grow ever more heavy.
