【右丁】
湘江を渡る
　杜審言（としんげん）

遅日園林悲昔遊　今春花鳥作辺愁
独憐京国人南竄　不似湘江水北流

春の長い日に庭園で昔の遊びを悲しみ、今春の花鳥は辺境での愁いを作り出す。
ひとり憐れむのは、京の都の人が南へ流されることで、湘江の水が北に流れるのとは似ていない。

【左丁】
去年都で楽しんだ時は面白かったが、南国へ左遷されて、この度の春の長い日に庭園の花鳥の風情を見るにつけても、都にいるならばこの風景を見てはさぞ面白いであろうに、旅の身のことゆえ、この風景を見て昔の遊びを思い出してかえって憂いが増す。私は京国の北の都の者であるが、南方へ左遷されて行くのは、湘江の水が北へ流れるのとも似ず、水の真似もならない羨ましいことである。掌故箋注に詳しい。

Crossing the Xiang River
　Du Shenyan

On long spring days in gardens I grieve for past pleasures,
This spring the flowers and birds create border sorrows.
Alone I pity how people from the capital are banished south,
Unlike the waters of Xiang River that flow northward.

Last year when I enjoyed myself in the capital, it was delightful, but having been demoted to the southern provinces, when I see the scenery of flowers and birds in gardens during these long spring days, if I were in the capital, viewing this landscape would surely be pleasant. But being a traveler, seeing this scenery makes me recall past pleasures and instead increases my melancholy. I am from the northern capital of the imperial realm, but being sent in demotion to the south is unlike the Xiang River's waters flowing north - I cannot even imitate the water's movement, which is enviable indeed. Details are found in the classical commentaries and annotations.
