現代語訳

入京使に逢う　岑参

故園東に望めば路漫々
双袖龍鍾として涙乾かず
馬上相逢うて紙筆無し
君に憑りて伝語して平安を報せしむ

【現代語訳・解説】
故郷を東に望めば道のりは遥々と遠く、両袖は老いさらばえて涙が乾くことがない。馬上で出会ったが紙と筆がないので、あなたに託して伝言し、私が無事であることを報告してもらう。

私はこの辺境の地に来ているので、故郷への道は遥々と遠いことだ。都への使者に出会ったので、何かを忘れて両袖に涙を濡らして、乾く間もない。老い衰えて行き悩んでいる。使者を羨ましく思い、故郷へ手紙を頼みたいけれど、馬上なので紙筆がない。ただそなたによって伝言するほどに、随分息災でいると言ってくれよ。

Looking east toward my old garden, the road stretches endlessly
My sleeves aged and worn, tears never dry
Meeting on horseback with no paper or brush
I rely on you to carry word and report my safety

【Modern Translation and Commentary】
Looking east toward my hometown, the road stretches endlessly far. My sleeves are worn with age and my tears never dry. Meeting an envoy on horseback but having no writing materials, I ask you to carry my message and report that I am safe.

Since I have come to this frontier region, the road to my hometown is very long and distant. Meeting an envoy bound for the capital, I am overwhelmed with emotion, my sleeves wet with tears that have no time to dry. Aged and weary, I struggle to continue. I envy the envoy and would like to entrust him with a letter to my hometown, but being on horseback, I have no paper or brush. So I simply ask you to convey this message - that I am doing quite well and am in good health.
