[Right folio] (There were those who slandered [Nobuyuki, and) Nobunaga, without even investigating the truth or falsehood of the matter, killed Nobuyuki. He later regretted this, and took pity on Musashi-no-kami's [Nobuyuki's] young son, Shichibe Nobuzumi, who was still a child. [Marginal note in red ink, upper portion] Yoshitatsu requests troops from Nobunaga In mid-April of the second year of Kōji [1556], Nobunaga's father-in-law, Saitō Yamashiro-no-kami Yoshitatsu, sent word informing him of his son Tatsuoki's rebellion, pleading: "Even throughout your life, you must not forget this grievance." Nobunaga promptly dispatched troops toward the Daira pass in Mino Province; however, since Yamashiro-no-kami [Yoshitatsu] died suddenly, Kazusa-no-suke [Nobunaga] turned back. From Tatsuoki's side, Makimura Mondo, Hayashi Handaifu, Kagai Yahachi, and Iwata Kageyu and others pursued the retreating force, and the Owari troops managed with difficulty to return to Kiyosu. Around this time, the lord of Iwakura Castle in Owari, Oda Iga-no-kami Nobutomo, was the son of the clan head Ise-no-kami Nobuyasu, and ought therefore to have harbored no ill will [toward Nobunaga]; yet he allied himself with Tatsuoki and rose up as a defender [of Tatsuoki's cause], and furthermore rallied the former lord Buei, as well as [forces from] Chita, Ishibashi, and Kira of Mikawa Province, and plotted to attack Kiyosu, and so forth. [Left folio] [Marginal note in red ink, upper portion] Hideyoshi's origins Hideyoshi was born to a servant girl employed by a commoner named Yasuke of Nakamura, near Kiyosu in Owari. Lamenting her poverty, she made nightly pilgrimages for one hundred nights to the Kannon at Jimokuji temple, praying for a child, and in the fifth year of Tenbun [1536], she gave birth to Hideyoshi. His childhood name was "Saru" [Monkey], and his father's identity is uncertain. At the age of seventeen, since the wife of a craftsman named Aoki Kanbei of Kiyosu was his aunt [mother's sister], Hideyoshi told her of his circumstances and expressed his wish to enter the service of a warrior. His aunt heard this and was moved with delight, and giving him a garment in exchange [for his services], accompanied him to Aoki and together they set off for Mikawa Province. After several years he returned to his home province, and on the first day of the ninth month of the first year of Eiroku [1558], at the age of twenty-three, he entered Nobunaga's service as a page [kobito], and so forth. [Marginal note in red ink, upper portion] Nobunaga gives his sister in marriage to Asai The reason Nobunaga cultivated relations with the Sasaki [Rokkaku] of Ōmi Province was to destroy Tatsuoki. For this reason, from the Sasaki side, since Asai Shinpachi, a retainer of Nobunaga, was a kinsman of Asai Shimōtsuke-no-kami Sukemasa, and since Sukemasa's son, Bizen-no-kami Nagamasa, had no wife, Shinpachi was used as an intermediary to make the proposal, and it was decided that Nobunaga's younger sister would be sent [in marriage]. The wedding palanquin entered Odani [Castle] in mid-fourth month [mid-April].
