[Right folio]
It was proclaimed that [the Asakura clan's kinsmen and retainers] were to have an audience [with Yoshiaki]. Among those who appeared were, from the clan itself: Asakura Magosaburō Kagetake, the same Tosa-no-kami Kageyuki, the same Nakatsukasa-no-taifu Kagetsune, the same Shikibu-no-taifu Kagekiyo, the same Genba-no-jō Kagetsura, the same Kamon-no-suke Kageuji, the same Izumo-no-kami Kagemori, and the same Hyōgo-no-suke Kagetsuna; Tōgō Shimōsa-no-kami; Shōrenga Ōmi-no-kami; Toba Uma-no-suke; Sandanzaki Gon-no-kami; Mukai Suruga-no-kami; Nakajima Suō-no-kami; and Ahaga Tajima-no-kami. From among the retainers: Yamazaki Nagato-no-kami Yoshiie, Maenami Fujiemon-no-jō Kagesada, Takumi Echigo-no-kami Yukitada, Kawai Aki-no-kami Munekiyo, Sakurai Shinzaemon Mototada, Inmaki Tamba-no-kami Yoshitoshi, Uozumi Bingo-no-kami Kagekata, Toga Saburōemon Yoshinori, Mizoe Ōisuke Nagatoshi, Toda Minbu-no-jō, Kobayashi Bitchū-no-kami, Hatano Jirōhyōe, Aoki Hayato-no-suke, and others each came forth to pay their respects.
It was around this time that Horie Nakatsukasa-no-sanrō Toshishige, who had been wandering as a fugitive in Kaga Province, was solicited by the Miyoshi and Matsunaga of Kyoto, and began making plans to muster an ikki [uprising] in Kaga, Noto, and Etchū, scheming to launch an attack [on the Asakura].
[Left folio]
The Miyoshi sent gold, silver, and clothing, and drew up oath documents [seishi], promising: "If you render military service in harassing the Asakura, Horie shall be granted Echizen, and Kaga, Noto, and Etchū shall be left to the ikki's desires." Greatly pleased by this, Horie gathered his forces at a place called Mattō in Kaga, and planned to strike after the Asakura had escorted the Kubō [Yoshiaki] on his march to the capital, and invade Echizen. Upon hearing of this, the Asakura calculated that their registered muster [chakutō] amounted to some twenty-three thousand men, and the forces of Takeda of Wakasa numbered three thousand five hundred—a combined total of twenty-seven thousand—but deducting those stationed at various defensive positions, the available army fell short of twenty thousand. Moreover, as the true intentions of Mitsukuri and Jōtei [Rokkaku Yoshikata] of Ōmi Province were difficult to fathom, opinion in council was divided as to whether it was wise to suddenly dispatch a large army, and so several months passed [in indecision]. Hearing of this, Yoshiaki declared that the Asakura's deliberation was entirely reasonable, and dispatched Ueno Nakatsukasa-no-taifu Kiyonobu and Nagaoka Hyōbu-no-taifu Fujitaka to Gifu (and so on).
