[Right folio] From those stationed in [Ōmi] Province, word came that Azai Shimotsuke-no-kami of [Odani], Abe Awaji-no-kami of Yamamoto, and Isono Tanba-no-kami of Nagahama had conspired together and, joining forces with Echizen, were about to attack [Nobunaga's forces] from the rear (and so forth). [Marginal note in vermillion, upper margin:] Attack on Yokoyama Castle Nobunaga attacked Yokoyama Castle. Inside the castle, the commander Yokoyama Sado-no-kami Takanaga, along with Ōnogi Tosa-no-kami, Mitamura Saemon-no-jō, Nomura Higo-no-kami, and Nomura Hyōgo-no-suke, among others—thirty-five hundred cavalry in total—held out in defense. The Azai of Odani, wishing to relieve [the castle], requested reinforcements from the Asakura. Yoshikage agreed, and sent his cousin Asakura Magosaburō Kagetake as commander, leading over seven thousand cavalry ahead, with Yoshikage himself also set to deploy. Nobunaga established his main camp at a place called Tatsu-ga-hana in front of Yokoyama. Throughout the night of the twenty-seventh, many fires were seen in the enemy's direction, and so [Marginal note in vermillion, upper margin:] Battle of Anegawa Nobunaga observed the Azai encampment and, determining that they were moving out to relieve Yokoyama Castle the following morning, reorganized his battle formations. Niwa Gorōzaemon, Hirate Kenmotsu, and Shindō Yamashiro-no-kami, with over three thousand cavalry, were stationed to contain Yokoyama Castle. Sakai Ukon, Ikeda Katsusaburō, [Left folio] Kinoshita Tōkichirō, Shibata Shuri-no-suke, Ujiie Hitachi-nyūdō Bokuzen, Iga Iga-no-kami, Sakuma, Akechi, Hachiya, and Mori—then Nobunaga's own main guard—then Tsuda Samanosuke and Hayashi Sado-no-kami: in total thirteen commanders took up their formations. On the western flank, Inaba Iyo-nyūdō Ittetsu led the way. Among Lord Tokugawa's retainers: Sakai Saemon Tadatsugu, Sakakibara Kohēta Yasumasa, Ogasawara Yohachirō Kiyotsugu, and Honda Heihachirō Tadakatsu; next came Ieyasu's own main guard; then Honda Bungo-no-kami Hirotaka and Matsudaira Sakon Yasuchika, and so on, arrayed in order. On the Azai side: Isono Tanba-no-kami, Takamiya Mikawa-no-kami, Ōu Yamato-no-kami, Azai Utano-suke, Akada Shinano-no-kami, Imamura Kamon-no-suke, and Rendaiji Hitachi-no-suke—over six thousand cavalry—encamped at Nomura to the east. Asakura Magosaburō Kagetake, leading seven thousand Echizen troops, took position to the west of Mitamura. At dawn on the twenty-eighth day of the sixth month, at around the Hour of the Hare [approximately 6 a.m.], the Azai advanced their forces, crossed the Ane River, and pressed into Nobunaga's encampment.
