[Right folio] Because word was sent from Usayama and Katata to Nobunaga, he resolved to leave this place (Settsu) and turn his forces against Yoshikage. Lord [Nobunaga's forces at] Noda were entrusted to Shibata Katsuie, the castle of Fukushima to Hachiya Hyōgo-no-kami Yoritaka, and the rear guard at Osaka was assigned to Akechi Jūbei Mitsuhide. (Abbreviated) [Marginal note in vermillion, upper margin:] Battle of Usayama Oda Nobunaga withdrew from Settsu Province and returned to the capital. Meanwhile, Yoshikage, with Asakura Nakatsukasa-no-taifu, Yamazaki Nagato-no-kami, Uozumi Bingo-no-kami, Asakura Dewa-no-kami, Daiyōji Umanosuke, and Inmaki Tanba-no-kami as his vanguard, launched an attack on Usayama at dawn on the nineteenth day. Kurō Nobuhari was encamped at Katata, and said to the castle commander Aochi Suruga-no-kami Yasusuke: "Since this castle does not lie along [Yoshikage's] route to the capital, even if he attacks and destroys Mori Sanzaemon and then marches on the capital, there will be nothing to regret about it—no benefit to be gained." He leftIkai Jinsuke as caretaker at Katata, and [Nobuhari and Yasusuke] immediately rode out to meet the attacking forces. Mori Sanzaemon Yoshinari, watching from afar atop Usayama Castle, concluded that he could not allow Nobuhari to be killed, and so sortied from the castle to engage the Asakura forces in battle. Mori Yoshinari found himself unable to withstand the great Asakura army, and drove into the force of some eight hundred horsemen under Kitanoshō Tosa-no-kami [Left folio] Kageyuki, where he was slain by Ishida Jūzō. Oda Kurō Nobuhari drove into the encampment of Daiyōji Umanosuke Kaguharu, grappled with Igarashi Kotarō, and both ran each other through, dying together. Aochi Suruga-no-kami, who had sided with Nobunaga and was stationed at Katata, was killed in battle before the Azai formations. (Abbreviated) [Marginal note in vermillion, upper margin:] Nobunaga and Yoshikage Make Peace At this time, imperial envoys dispatched to mediate were Sanjō Dainagon Sanezumi and Shigai Chūnagon Fuyutaka. A peace was concluded between Oda and Asakura on the basis of sworn documents from Nobunaga, and on the fifteenth day of the twelfth month Yoshikage returned to Echizen, while Nobunaga returned to Mino Province on the seventeenth of the same month. [Marginal note in vermillion, upper margin:] Nobunaga Deploys Forces on Multiple Later Occasions Yoshikage Deploys Forces on Multiple Later Occasions On the twenty-sixth day of the seventh month of the following year, Nobunaga arrived as far as Ōtsu and Uchide-no-Hama. Thereafter, all enemies in western Ōmi withdrew and scattered, and both Kido and Tanaka castles in Takashima District were granted to Akechi Hyūga-no-kami Mitsuhide. That spring, Nobunaga ordered Akechi to establish Sakamoto as his home castle, and furthermore declared that Mitsuhide's courtesy title should be changed, whereupon he became Hyūga-no-kami. His prior stipend was in Shiga District… (continues)
