**[Right folio]** After completing his visit to Eiheiji Temple and the Buddhist rites there, Yoshikage was making his way home on foot along the mountain path when he summoned Akechi Jūbei and asked him, "Which location in this province would be most suitable for a castle?" Akechi replied: "In recent times, firearms have appeared, and large guns are fired down from heights, so castle sites of old are no longer adequate. A mountain located more than twenty-odd *chō* beyond the stronghold is necessary. In this province, for a flatland castle, Kitanoshō would be most suitable; for a mountain castle, Chōsenji would be the right location. In Kashū (Kaga Province), the area around Komatsadera; and in Osaka, the temple precinct of the Osaka Honganji would be a matchless site." Upon hearing this, Yoshikage gave a laugh and said, "Mitsuhide seems to have nothing but temple sites on his mind." (And so on.) The head priest of Eiheiji during Yoshikage's time was a monk called Soku. After the founding monk Dōgen returned from China, Hatano Izumo-no-kami Yoshishige, lay name Nyoze, the lord of Echizen Province, repeatedly invited Dōgen, who came down to Echizen in the summer of Kan'en 2 (1244) and established a temple in Shihi-no-shō, Yoshida District. His disciple, the monk Ejō, became the second abbot. Ejō was the son of the Middle Counselor of Torikai, Fujiwara no Tamezane. Gikai, Gien, Giin, Senne, Jakukan, and the following **[Left folio]** members of the dharma community (*hōken*) all became disciples of Ejō. Dōgen passed away on the twenty-eighth day of the eighth month of Kenchō 5 (1253), at the age of fifty-four. In the early part of the fifth month of Eiroku 8 (1565), Akechi Jūbei Mitsuhide fell ill with smallpox and underwent hot spring treatment at Yamashiro in Kashū (Kaga Province). He traveled there together with Ono'a Shōnin of Chōnenji Temple in Nagasaki. (And so on.) Akechi came to Echizen in the autumn of Kōji 2 (1556), arriving from Mino Province. Chōnenji Temple in Nagasaki was connected to him, so he entrusted his wife and children to the care of those within the temple's domain. From the spring of the following year (Kōji 3), he traveled to Kaga, Etchū, Echigo, Ōshū, and then to Odawara in Sagami Province, Sunpu, and Kiyosu Castle in Owari, and observed the state of affairs at Ōmi, Kyoto, and the Shogunate. From there he traveled further westward, wandering the country for the purpose of martial training (*musha shugyō*). On his return journey, he prayed at the Hiyoshi Shrine, passed through western Ōmi, and after six years in total returned to this province to enter the service of Yoshikage. (And so on.) The sacred lanterns of Kitagata. The root-rising pine of Shiokoshi — a matter of the roots rising more than two *jō*.
