[Right folio] [Marginal note in red ink, upper portion] Mitsuhide tests firearms at Ichijō In the summer of Eiroku 6 [1563], Yoshikage summoned Akechi Jihei [Mitsuhide] and declared: "Firearms did not exist in former times, but I have heard that they were brought over from foreign lands around the Eishō era [1504–1521]. Until recently they were rare things in the world, yet [you] brought honor [to our forces] in Kaga Province—a most remarkable achievement. I should like to observe the workings of firearms in person before long." Mitsuhide received these words and, consulting with Kanemaki Yarokuzaemon, the magistrate of various duties [shoyaku bugyō], constructed a firing range [idome] near the western riding grounds below Anyōji temple, arranging it over five ken facing north. A target of one shaku square was erected, and from mid-Hour of the Snake [around 10 a.m.] to around the time the conch horn was blown at the Hour of the Horse [around noon] on the nineteenth day of the fourth month, one hundred lead balls were fired. The number that struck the black mark [center of the target] was sixty-eight; the remaining thirty-two also struck the edges of the target. Yoshikage was deeply impressed, and one hundred younger sons of his retainers were designated as firearms auxiliaries [teppō yoriko] and placed under Mitsuhide's command. And so forth. ([Mitsuhide] left Mino in Kōji 2 [1556].) Shōnenji temple in Nagasaki was a temple with a monk connected to Akechi, and [Mitsuhide] had entrusted his wife and children to that domain. From Kōji 3 [1557], he wandered through various provinces for six years, and then returned to this province [Echizen] and [Left folio] entered the service of Yoshikage. And so forth. [Marginal note in red ink, upper portion] Eiheiji On the occasion of the seventeenth memorial service for Yoshikage's father, Danjō-zaemon-no-jō Takakage, on the twentieth day of the third month of Eiroku 7 [1564], [Yoshikage] made a pilgrimage from Ichijōdani to Kissanzan Eiheiji temple. At this time, there was an exchange of questions and answers with the resident abbot, Soku Oshō, regarding the founding of the temple. And so forth. Dōgen crossed over to China [Sōtō Zen's Tang/Song China; here called "Shintан"] at the age of twenty-four, and after six years in Song China returned to Japan. At the invitation and reception of Hatano Izumo-no-kami Yoshishige, lay monk Nyoze, the governor of Echizen, he came down to Echizen Province and founded Eiheiji temple in Shihi-no-shō, Yoshida district. And so forth. In the autumn of Hōji 1 [1247], at the invitation of Hōjō Sagami-no-kami Tokiyori, Dōgen went down to Kamakura, where he conferred the bodhisattva precepts upon Tokiyori. The following summer he returned to the mountain temple. And so forth. The second abbot was Dōgen's disciple Ejō [Koun Ejō], who was the son of Torikaino-chūnagon Fujiwara no Tamezane. And so forth. Gikai, Gien, Gin, Sene, Jakuen, and other dharma companions [hōken] all became disciples of Ejō, and on the twenty-eighth day of the eighth month of Kenchō 5 [1253]— [continued]
