Mitsuhide explains strategic strongholds to Yoshikage
When Yoshikage asked Akechi [Mitsuhide] about the strategic strongholds [yōgai] throughout the province, [Mitsuhide] replied: "In the present age, since large cannon [ōzutsu] are fired down from high ground, mountains located more than thirty chō outside of a stronghold pose no difficulty. In my humble opinion, within this province [Echizen], Chōsenji-yama would be the most suitable." When [Yoshikage] then asked, "What about Kaga Province?", [Mitsuhide] replied, "The area around Komatsudera is generally speaking favorable terrain." When [Yoshikage] further asked, "What about the Kyoto region?", [Mitsuhide] replied: "I have not had sufficient opportunity to observe the environs of Kyoto; that said, the temple precincts [jidai/jinai] of the Honganji in Osaka, Settsu Province—[the domain] of your honored kinsmen—are an incomparable site." Upon hearing this, Yoshikage laughed and said: "Mitsuhide seems to have an eye only for temple grounds." And so forth.

Sea Routes and Distances
In early the fifth month of Eiroku 8 [1565], Akechi Jihei fell ill with small sores [kogasa, possibly a mild form of smallpox], and traveling together with the Reverend On'a of Shōnenji temple in Nagasaki, went to take the waters at the hot springs of Yamashiro in Kaga Province. On the way, they stopped at Mikuni, made a shrine visit to Oshima island, and that night lodged at the home of Hōri Jibu-no-taifu.
[Left folio]
There, [Mitsuhide] and On'a composed renga [linked verse] together in a two-person session [ryōgin]. Furthermore, adding Mitsuhide's retainers Miyake and Okuda, along with the young monk Jōami of Shōnenji, they composed another round of one hundred verses [hyakuin]. And so forth. At this time, a boat captain [sendō] named Tone from the bay came out and spoke of dried foods from Ezo [Hokkaido]. [Mitsuhide] then inquired about the various harbors, and Tone related the following: "This harbor [Mikuni] can accommodate four or five hundred large vessels without becoming crowded. Beyond this, [there are harbors at] Ōnyū, Yoshizaki; in Kaga, Ataka, Motoyoshi, and Miya-no-koshi; in Wakasa, the bay of Yanana [Yana-no-ura] at Takahama—these do not see heavy ship traffic." According to his [Tone's] journal: from Mikuni in Echizen, heading in the direction of the Tiger [north-northeast], thirty-five ri by sea to the harbor of Fukura in Noto; from there, eighteen ri to the harbor of Wajima in the same province; seven ri to the harbor of Shiotsu at Cape Suzu in the same province; forty-five ri to the harbor of Ogi in Sado; twenty-five ri to the harbor of Washizaki in the same province; eighteen ri to the harbor of Niigata in Echigo; twenty-five ri to the harbor of Aoshima in Dewa; thirty ri to the harbor of Todoshima in the same province; twenty ri to the harbor of Sakata in the same province; thirty ri to the harbor of Akita in the same province; eighteen ri to Ōshū [Mutsu Province]— [continued]
