(Continuing from the previous page:) If (the calculation) is off even by a minute or a second, how could an eclipse (交食) possibly be computed with precision? Therefore, one must carefully and meticulously examine the degrees of its motion, and only then can one establish methods and put them to practical use. In general, the Moon does not follow the single line of the ecliptic, but on its own traces the "touring circle" (游輪, epicycle/orbit) in the course of one month. The diameter (of this circle's inclination) is approximately twelve degrees; it enters and exits the inner and outer sides of the ecliptic, and the farthest distance (from the ecliptic) on each side is six degrees. This circle intersects the ecliptic like a small ring attached to the belt of the ecliptic and travels along with it. Beyond its own intrinsic revolution (本旋), the Moon has a mean motion (平行) of more than thirteen degrees per day. However, there are four reference frames (界) for this motion: The **first frame** takes as its starting point the calculation from a certain degree and minute of a particular celestial mansion (宮次). This frame is fixed and does not move. The **second frame** is the apogee (最高) of the Moon's own sphere (本天). This is not a fixed frame; it advances to the right (westward), following the heaven, by more than seven minutes each day. This is because the Moon's daily motion measured from the apogee of its own sphere is more than thirteen degrees and three minutes. Therefore, in terms of mean motion (平行), the Moon completes one revolution in twenty-seven days and thirty marks (刻) and some fraction, already returning to the original degree of the celestial mansion (from which it started). Yet it must travel an additional twenty-three marks and some fraction — totaling twenty-seven days and fifty-three marks — before it can at last reach the apogee of its own sphere again. This is now called the Moon's "self-motion" (自行, proper motion), and was formerly called the "revolution period" (転周). Completing one full revolution is called the "completion of revolution" (転終). The apogee itself (月孛) traverses the entire heaven in a little over eight years. This is called the "lunar apogee" (月孛, *geppai*). [Interlinear note: The lunar apogee (月孛) is the point at which the Moon's path is at its most extreme height and farthest distance. Later people called it the "lunar apogee star" (月孛星).] The **third frame** is the location where the two paths — the ecliptic (黄道) and the lunar path (白道) — cross each other. These are called the "ascending node" (正交) and the "descending node" (中交). This frame also has its own motion, which is retrograde, advancing (retrograde) by more than three minutes each day. Consequently, the Moon's mean daily motion measured from the ascending node amounts to more than thirteen degrees and thirteen minutes. At twenty-seven days and twenty-seven marks, subtracting the nodal motion of one degree and twenty-three minutes, one obtains twenty-seven days and fifteen marks and some fraction. The Moon thereby returns to its original node. This is called the "nodal period" (交終). The **fourth frame** concerns the Moon's angular separation from the Sun. Since the Sun travels approximately one degree per day, the Moon falls behind the Sun by more than twelve degrees and ten minutes each day. After twenty-nine days and fifty-three marks and some fraction, the Moon finally catches up with the Sun and conjoins with it again. This is called the "synodic period" (朔策). In antiquity, it was said that the Moon travels through nine paths (九道).
